With Tebow's official introduction, the 'fun' has begun for the Jets - MetroWest Daily News

Speaking at his meet-the-New York press conference on Monday, Tim Tebow said he thinks the Jets' "quarterback room will be a lot of fun."

It'll be fun, all right. Fun, like one of those pie-throwing scenes in a "Three Stooges" episode.

You just wouldn't want one of the three quarterbacks in the Jets' room – Mark Sanchez, Tebow and, lest we forget, Greg McElroy – throwing one of those pies.

It's going to be fun, alright; and the fun (or is it chaos?) has already begun.

Asked Sunday at the NFL meetings in Palm Beach, Fla., if New York was big enough for his Giants and the larger-than-life Tebow, Jints co-owner John Mara delivered a pie to the Jets' kisser.

"I don't know," said Mara, "but the David Carr press conference will be tomorrow, too."

Shortly after the Tebow trade, the re-signing of Eli Manning's seldom seen and rarely heard-from backup was announced on the Giants' website, which is the manner in which Super Bowl champions handle such matters.

So do 30 other NFL franchises, unless I missed the press conference the Patriots held inside the Dana Farber Field House to announce that Brian Hoyer had signed his second-round tender from the team.

Match the Jets and Tebow, though, and, well, things are different.

And so noontime Monday was "Tebow Time" in Florham Park, N.J., where the Giants' intercity rival and the Pats' archrival in the AFC East staged the quarterback's introductory press conference inside a field house.

Yes, the introductory press conference for a backup quarterback whose next pass is more likely to be incomplete than complete (his career passing percentage is 47.3) was held inside a field house – a credentialed event for a QB whose head coach, Rex Ryan, has indicated will begin his days in his new locale in a Wildcat role.

Both, ESPN and the NFL Network, saw fit to televise the entire press conference live while Boston radio station WEEI carried a portion of it.

Just a day earlier, that station's Dale Arnold called the Jets' handling of the situation "the dumbest thing I've ever seen in my life."

I would only argue that it was the dumbest thing I'd seen since a certain baseball manager called for a suicide squeeze with runners on second and third and one out in the last of the ninth inning to forge a tie in an exhibition game.

To be sure, Tebow's case is rather unique.

Come Sanchez's initial struggles this season (likely to happen sooner rather than later to a quarterback with a fragile psyche whose career touchdown totals barely outnumber his career interceptions, 55-51), Jets fans will be chanting the name of their recently-acquired backup.

Days have passed since the on-again/off-again deal with Denver finally brought Tebow to the Jets and where the forever optimistic one sees fun I continue to envision utter chaos.

The media has fueled what some have termed "Timsanity," of course.

Prior to the press conference, ESPN ran a segment entitled "Big Arrivals to the Big Apple" that showed clips of Babe Ruth, Pele, Reggie Jackson, Wayne Gretzky, Alex Rodriguez and Brett Favre.

Tebow's arrival spurs flashbacks to the likes of the Babe, Pele, "Mr. October" and "The Great One?"

Uh, OK.

Then again, I don't suppose the Babe gave anyone the bright idea of constructing an electronic billboard in his honor.

The New York Daily News reported over the weekend that an electronic billboard featuring Tebow emerged on the New Jersey side of the Lincoln Tunnel, promoting him and his endorsement partner, Jockey, with the words: "We support Tebow & New York."

I guess we'll pencil Sanchez in for boxers, then.

On Sunday, the New York Post carried a story headlined, "Some Jets wary of Tim circus" that read, in part, "Several current Jets, who spoke with The Post Saturday, asked not to be quoted but expressed disbelief at the team bringing Tebow in."

This in a locker room that was already a house divided.

The Post story went on to say, "The idea of a backup quarterback having a press conference is something (several current Jets) can't wrap their heads around, and they know it's just the beginning."

Yep.

The fun has just begun.
