PARKERSBURG - More than 100 children of all ages played games, did science experiments and learned during the annual Kids' Fun Day at City Park Saturday in the pavilion.
"We'll probably have close to 150 kids this year," said event organizer Kristin Walker. "Every year the attendance increases a little bit more."
Walker said she and the other organizers did not know how many children would attend this year's event because of the cooler temperatures and overcast skies.
"We didn't know what to expect, but it doesn't look like the weather hurt us," she said.
Walker said there is a different theme for each year's Kids' Fun Day, which began in 1998. This year's theme was science with all of the games, crafts and stories centered around different science themes.
"The crafts include making play dough, which teaches the kids about mixtures, and lava lamps in water bottles to show how water and oil don't mix," Walker said.
The plan for the event is to do a follow-up next year to see the effect the games and experiments have on the children who participate.
"We are curious as to how what we do here shapes the kids in the coming year," Walker said.
Sports activities included the "treasure walk," which is like a cake walk but with a toy prize, and cornhole.
For next year's event, Walker said they would like to get the input of area children in the planning.
"We want to get children more involved in the planning for next year," she added.
Children in middle school and high school are asked to participate. Those who would like to participate are encouraged to contact Walker at 304-863-8253.
