BOSTON -- The Bruins' three-game win streak was snapped by the Capitals on Thursday. Despite a late third-period rally to force overtime, the Bruins fell 3-2 in a shootout. Brooks Laich scored the shootout winner, Marcus Johansson had a goal and an assist and Alexander Ovechkin had two assists for Washington, which pulled into a tie with the Sabres for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
Tyler Seguin and Patrice Bergeron each had shootout goals for the Bruins after Andrew Ference and David Krejci scored late in the third period to tie the game at 2.
Tim Thomas had 21 saves for the Bruins, while Michal Neuvirth made 26 saves for the Capitals after relieving Tomas Vokoun, who left with an undisclosed injury late in the first period.
Chara stays hot: Ever since he played his 1,000th game, Zdeno Chara has been playing like a man on a mission. Chara assisted on the Bruins' first goal and has a goal and four assists in his past three games.
Krejci stepping up: With a goal and an assist Thursday, Bruins forward David Krejci has four points in his past two games and once again is getting hot at the right time. Krejci has thrived down the stretch and in the playoffs the past two seasons, and if he keeps playing this way it can only mean good things for him and the Bruins.
McQuaid exits game in first period with injury: Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid left the game 14 minutes into regulation after taking a hard hit from Capitals defenseman Jason Chimera. Thankfully, McQuaid was able to skate off with the assistance of his teammates, but he did not return. Chimera came flying in from the blue line and hit McQuaid just as the Bruins rearguard turned his back toward Chimera. Chimera was assessed a five-minute major for charging and a game misconduct. The Bruins were unable to score on the power play. Following the game, coach Claude Julien told the media that McQuaid had a cut above his eye and wasn't feeling "quite right" after the hit so the medical staff didn't allow him to return.
Seidenberg out, Corvo in on defense: Dennis Seidenberg didn't play Thursday due to an infection from a laceration he suffered last Saturday against the Kings. Seidenberg had the cut stitched up and played in the Bruins' previous two games, but Julien said it opened up and got infected so the Bruins took the precautionary route and sat him. In Seidenberg's place on the blue line was Joe Corvo, who had been a healthy scratch the past six games. Here's what the lineup looked like to start the game Thursday:
