Friends have described a young man killed in a quadbike crash over the weekend as a fun-loving guy who loved to party with a "smile that could light up a room".

Palmerston North man Luke Randle, 20, died and another man was injured when the quadbike they were riding flipped on a beach at Tangimoana at 1.30am on Saturday. The men were coming back from fishing when they hit a bit of driftwood.

Mr Randle's mother, Tina, said Luke was a fun-loving, rugby-loving boy who was "everybody's friend".

Mr Randle's Facebook page has been filled with messages from friends and family since his death.

Jonny Hobo-Tuck wrote that the pair had some 'epic' times together. "I could harp on about how many lives you touched but it wouldn't be sincere because I can only genuinely speak of how you touched mine."

Hannah Walker wrote, "Rest easy buddy, you taught me that friends are paramount and to never be anything short of who I am. Your laughter was contagious and you had a smile that lit up the room."

Others posts spoke of a good friend who loved to party, was always smiling and had a wicked sense of humour.

"Rest easy Randle! You surely lived life to its fullest and with no regrets! Gone too soon but never forgotten!", Josh Meads wrote.

The crash on Saturday was one of two deaths involving a motorcycle in the lower North Island over the weekend.

In a separate crash, a 59-year-old motorcyclist, believed to be from Tawa, was killed while racing in the annual Cliffhanger Hill Climb near Carterton on yesterday at about 3pm.

Advertisements describe it as being "geared for racers, weekend cafe heroes, or anyone that wants to scream up this primo twisty hill in safety".

He is expected to be named later this morning.

On Saturday, a 21-year-old Palmerston North man was seriously injured when the motorcycle he was on crashed into a traffic island at the intersection of State Highway 56 and Carey Street in Longburn about 11.30pm.

The man was in the intensive care unit at Palmerston North Hospital yesterday with serious orthopaedic injuries, a hospital spokeswoman said.
