Sun 'n Fun Parts Exchange a Flea Market for Airplanes - The Ledger
Mar 28th 2012, 02:15

LAKELAND | One man's junk is another man's treasure.

The Parts Exchange, located inside Hangar E at Sun 'n Fun, is sometimes called an airplane flea market. But if you need a part for just about any airplane, this flea market turns into a mecca.

The hangar is wall-to-wall airplane parts, with plenty of tools, books, clothing, camping equipment and odds and ends mixed in.

"We've got anything and everything," said the boss of the Parts Exchange, Wendy Gaynor, who has worked 22 Fly-Ins.

• Check out our website for Sun 'n Fun stories, a map of the area, photo galleries, videos and tweets at: www.theledger.com/sunnfun •

There are plenty of large "parts" on the grounds outside of the hangar — including a large part of a Russian MiG 21, the fuselage and the cockpit. On Tuesday, it was surrounded by a lot of curious people.

Paul Abare, who lives in Savannah, Ga., said he bought the fuselage on Friday from "some guy" back home.

"The guy had an Army-Navy surplus store in Savannah that went out of business," said Abare, who is a military collector. "This was out in his backyard" for years.

MiG-21s were first introduced into the Soviet Air Force in 1959. It was the Russian short-range fighter plane of the Cold War in the 1960s and '70s. When Russia built better planes, the MiG-21s wound up in Soviet-friendly countries, including China and North Vietnam, where it battled American planes. Abare can't figure out the year the fuselage was built. But he knows what he wants for it: $6,500. He won't dare say what he paid for it, but you can bet it's not close to $6,500.

It will be a collector who buys the fuselage, Abare said.

"This, you can put it in your garage," he said. "A whole plane, you can't."

Whatever money Abare commands for the relic, Sun 'n Fun will get 10 percent. The knowledgeable people who work at the Parts Exchange do so as volunteers.

Gaynor said people clean out their hangars and bring things to the Parts Exchange.

"Here's how it works," Gaynor said. "Your bring your stuff to us. We sell the stuff it for you and give you money. Then, you buy new stuff at Sun 'n Fun."

The upgrade for the Parts Exchange this year is that it's located in a hangar instead of a tent. The tent from last year "blew up, but didn't blow over," Gaynor said. "About four years ago, a storm blew it over."

Gaynor has been volunteering at the Parts Exchange for a long time and has met a lot of people. She said that invariably, at airports around the country, a stranger will come up to her and say: "You made me money."
