Jeff Brown and Kyle Carter may sit on the bench for a living, but they will be on the move Saturday during the John J. Eikenburg 8K Law Week Fun Run.

"Instead of running for office, some local judges and justices are running for a cause," said Sherry Bankhead, a committee co-chair for the event, which is sponsored by the Houston Bar Association. Now in its 27th year, the race has raised nearly $1 million for the Center, a nonprofit residential facility for adults with developmental disabilities.

Brown, a justice who was appointed to the Fourteenth Court of Appeals in 2007, says he is "intermittently a regular runner."

Despite that description of himself, Brown avidly supports the event, having run or volunteered in about a dozen races.

"You get a flavor of what you're running for when you come out to the Law Week run because the folks from the Center are there and participating (in the family walk)," Brown said.

Brown, who ran the Houston marathon in 2004, says he hopes to hit a nine-minute-mile pace on Saturday despite intermittent practice.

Carter, a judge for Harris County's 125th Civil Court, may be a relative newcomer to the Law Week Fun Run, but the few times he's entered, he hasn't come alone. Last year, he registered two three-runner teams.

"I wanted to try to do what I could to influence other people to get active," he said.

An overweight child, Carter started running in college to get in shape. He met his future wife through running, and they still work out together.

Carter, who has at least one team lined up for Saturday's race, stresses that he's not competitive. He runs strictly for fitness - and fun. And for him, the thing that's the most fun about the Law Week run is the course.

"I like the fact you get a chance to run out on Allen Parkway. It's the best place to run in this entire city, with that beautiful park and the bayou.

"It's a treat."
