Parents, kids come together at Family Fun Day and Summer Camp Fair - Winona Daily News

With silly putty to make, marigolds to plant, science experiments to conduct, crafts to make, and summer camps and programs to look into, kids and parents were busy Saturday during the Family Fun Day and Summer Camp Fair at Winona Middle School.

The event, sponsored by Winona State University's Children Center, community education and Winona's park and recreation department, had 14 science- and art-based activities for kids to choose from while parents visited booths to learn about summer camps and activities.

"It's a one-stop shop," said June Reineke, the main organizer.

Megan Olstad and her daughter Lily, 4, hadn't come for the many activities and booths — they came for Lily to sing with her group during one of the events. But they ended up staying to participate in several activities. Lily has been singing for longer than her mother can remember.

"She loves to sing and dance," Megan said.

Lily picked a spot next to her best friend, Sydney Williamson, and they made a few funny faces at each other and smiled.

"If you're a friend and you know it give a hug," Lily sang, right before leaning over to give her friend a hug as they both giggled.

After her performance, Lily skipped off to see the fire truck parked outside, then returned to make the rounds of the event's activities.

First thing she found was goo.

Lily stuck her hand in the tub of corn starch and water mixture, and her eyes lit up as she watched it drip from her fingers. The goo was meant to teach kids the science of solids and liquids.

"Depending on how you touch it, it can be either," said WSU student Laura Jopp.

While Lily was entranced by the goo, Megan took the chance to seek out information, stopping at the Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts booth to learn about pre-ballet lessons for Lily. When she returned to check on Lily, one student volunteer was preparing a travel bag full of goo for Lily to take home.

Before the fair ended Lily planned to get her face painted, build a puzzle and make colored silly putty.

Her mother, meanwhile, planned to begin mapping out Lily's summer.
