We love football in the Deep South. We give scholarships and helmet stickers and players-of-the-week-awards because of playing very HARD in sports. Recently NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell punished all NFL fans. He actually did more damage than any hit caused by the New Orleans Saints' defense.
It might be interesting to do the research. How many game-ending hits came from each team in the NFL? If a team becomes abusive, it certainly should be punished as appropriate. But there are other factors. Mr. Goodell has amputated the body of the Saints to cure a common NFL reality called DEFENSE.
Goodell is a fraudulent coward. ESPN commentators have noted they couldn't tell of any particularly vicious Saints hits. One of those ESPN commentators played against the Saints the last three years. This wouldn't have happened to a major-market team. The Saints are possibly going to lose a franchise over this overkill. Maybe that is Mr. Goodell's goal.
Remember, we can all bank on the fact the NFL is paying officials. Let Mr. Goodell demonstrate his sincerity by fining those officials of the Saints "violation games." Saints fans finally get a team to be proud of. We never heard of Minnesota, Chicago or Dallas teams of the past being penalized for hitting. Their members are included in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Goodell should be replaced with an administrator with a clue. The game is contact, or else put flags on them. Stop selling highlights of hits if you're sincere. But wait: The "monster defenses of the past" played in major TV markets. Yes, Roger, you showed your example.
