Kentucky basketball's Michael Kidd-Gilchrist making FTs, 'having fun' - Louisville Courier-Journal

ATLANTA — University of Kentucky freshman Michael Kidd-Gilchrist said that as the UK-Indiana game unfolded, he was not aware that he had made every free throw he attempted, eventually finishing 10 for 10 to highlight the Wildcats' 35-for-37 free-throw performance.

Kidd-Gilchrist had made only 6 of 11 free throws in Kentucky's four previous games. He entered the game with a .735 percentage but was 1 for 3 in UK's first two NCAA games.

"I was just playing my game," Kidd-Gilchrist said. "That's it. I didn't notice it at first. I was just having fun on the court."

Black for Baylor

Like Louisville and Cincinnati, the Bears are outfitted by adidas. Don't look for the Bears to be wearing their neon green uniforms against Kentucky. They are expected to wear black.

The neon green is rough on the eyes, but Baylor coach Scott Drew likes them.

"Personally we've had some turnover issues earlier in the year," Drew said. "I think this (the neon green) has helped. We pass to the right guys because we stand out, so I'm good with that."

Common foes

Baylor and Kentucky had two common opponents — Kansas and Mississippi State.

The Wildcats defeated the Jayhawks in Madison Square Garden 75-65 and beat the Bulldogs in Starkville 73-64. The Bears defeated Mississippi State 54-52 in Dallas. They lost two of three games against Kansas, losing to the Jayhawks 68-54 at home and 92-74 in Lawrence. Baylor beat Kansas 81-72 in the Big 12 Tournament.

Multitalented

Everyone knows UK freshmen Anthony Davis and Marquis Teague's primary talent, but both revealed a secondary skill before Saturday's practice. Davis is an aspiring artist and Teague a singer.

"My uncle went to drawing school, and I actually started drawing last year," Davis said. "He used to show me his pictures that he drew … and I said, 'Man, that's cool. I want to be able to do that one day.' He said, 'I can teach you how to draw.' "

Davis said he worked on it nightly and now regularly sketches cartoon characters and even designed a tattoo for Kidd-Gilchrist, "but he never got it; I just wasted paper." For Davis, his art is an escape from his rising fame and the pressure to deliver UK's eighth national championship.

"When you're drawing, you really don't think about anything else but what you're doing," he said. "You just get your mind off everything and just get in a calm mind-set and relax."

As for Teague's singing, he's just one of many teammates who belt out tunes in the locker room. Kidd-Gilchrist said he likes to croon in the shower.

"Everybody on this team thinks they can sing, rap, dance," forward Terrence Jones said. "So if you're in our locker room, you'll see some comedy. Marquis can really sing. But everybody else thinks they can really sing. That's the problem. But he's the only one that can really sing."
