Fun waves expected for Vans contest - OCRegister
Mar 28th 2012, 00:30

The excitement surrounding the Vans Pier Classic is a buzz on the beach in Huntington, as pros hit the water to warm up for the 4-star contest that starts on the south side of the pier on Wednesday.

And it should be an exciting one to watch, with combo swell expected most of the week. tHE contest wraps up on Sunday.

Photog John Salanoa was out catching some of the action as pro surfers showed up today to get used to the chilly water. Here's a recap from and photos from Salanoa:

"The talk on the shore line this morning was about the amount of top seeds who travel the world on the WQS tour  who have come to Huntington Beach for the 4-star Vans Pier Classic this year. With ASP making it pretty tough to make the World Tour this year, top-seeded pros are making the trip to rack up much needed points, some coming in today from Western Australia, just off the Margaret River Prime Event or the 6-star Burton Toyota Pro.

Orange County has its hopefuls in the mix with Colin Moran, Ian Crane, Derek Peters, Tanner Gudauskas, Nate Yeomans, Brad Ettinger and Andrew Doheny all surfing the pro, with a few of them in the Pro Junior.

The Vans Pro starts up with the round of 144 tomorrow at 7 a.m., and the Vans Pro Jr. hitting the water Thursday. Contest will run through the weekend with the finals on both Pro and Pro Jr running on Sunday.

And the waves should make for a fun show, according to Surfline.com. We've got a pretty hefty combo swell heading our way. Here's more from forecaster Kevin Wallis:Weather:We expect to see partly to mostly cloudy skies in the mornings and evenings through Friday, with partial clearing the afternoons. Morning wind will be light, with a moderate westerly sea breeze developing each afternoon.

Beach temperatures should top out in the low- to mid-60s, while water temperatures remain in the low- to mid-50s. There is a chance of rain, with a cooling trend, as we move through the weekend, before our weather warms up early next week.

Waves:We'll see good combination of swells from both the west-northwest and south-southwest in the next few days. New west-northwest swell will build this afternoon, get stronger on Thursday and then ease on Friday. Small south-southwest swell will be running today and Thursday, with a building trend of southerly surf on Friday.

Surf from this afternoon through Friday should be in the 3- to 5-foot range for many of the better-exposed breaks, while best combo spots should see larger 6- to 7-foot waves on Thursday and Friday. Area beach breaks with a view to both swells will see good-shaped waves, with conditions generally cleanest in the morning.

A larger mix of south-southwest and west-northwest swells is expected to build over the weekend, although conditions could be problematic with building and strong onshore westerly wind Saturday afternoon and Sunday.

Check out Surfline.com for the latest details on this mix of swells. Have fun, be safe and we'll see you out in the water!
