The NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament really starts today in arenas around the country. Several years ago, Forbes Magazine said these next two days are the least productive of the year for the American workforce. It is no coincidence. Everybody slows down to watch the NCAA Tournament.
Many consider it the best two days in sports. Even non sports fans enjoy the event as they participate in an office pool or play a bracket at school.
A major part of what makes the opening two days are the upsets. The Cinderella stories. Fans love it when the little guy beats the big guy. It is exciting to see the school from the small conference upset the school with the larger budgets from the larger conferences.
In recent years, I have noticed a disturbing trend by the NCAA tournament committee. While we fans love the upsets, I am not sure the committee does. If you notice the last few years they have tried to cut down the number of upsets by forcing some of the dangerous mid-majors to play each other. By pairing them against each other, they don't get a chance to knock off teams from the power conferences.
Now, they often beat each other in the first round, just as Butler and Old Dominion did last year or Davidson and Gonzaga four years ago, This year, the committee is making Wichita State and VCU playing each other.
Why do that? Why not give the smaller budget schools a chance to make a statement against the schools from the larger conferences? That is what makes the tournament fun.
I have a feeling the NCAA committee thinks we won't notice. But, we have and we don't like it. Heck it was up to the NCAA, Hoosiers would never have been based on a reat life story.
