Canucks lose game to Blackhawks, Sedin to hard hit - Chicago Tribune
Mar 22nd 2012, 07:38

Chicago, IL —

Andrew Shaw scored the game-winning goal 2:42 into overtime, sending the Chicago Blackhawks to a 2-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks at United Center.

Dave Bolland started the winning play when he picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and gained the blue line with speed along the left-wing boards. Bolland looked up and fed Johnny Oduya, who was trailing the play. Oduya fired a quick wrist shot on net from the high slot that was tipped by Shaw past Roberto Luongo for the winner.

Patrick Kane scored in regulation and Corey Crawford made 24 saves in the victory for the Blackhawks, who extended their winning streak to five games.

"It's the right time to peak," Kane said. "A couple of weeks ago we were fighting for a playoff spot and hoping that we were going to get in any way possible. It looks pretty bright right now, but we have to keep winning, keep playing the right way and see how high we can get."

Jannik Hansen scored and Luongo gave up two goals on 37 shots for the Canucks, who have dropped four of the last five games and, to make matters worse, lost star forward Daniel Sedin in the second period after he took a hit up high from Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith.

The Canucks opened the scoring just 27 seconds into the first period after Hansen accepted a perfect cross-ice pass at the blue line from Samuel Pahlsson. Hansen glided to the right circle and fired a quick wrist shot over the right shoulder of Crawford.

Chicago responded to tie the game 3:12 into the second frame with a little bit of luck.

Kane brought the puck into the offensive zone on the right wing, cut to the slot and fired a shot on net that was blocked to the right corner. Andrew Brunette retrieved the loose disc behind the net and fed Marian Hossa to the right of the cage. Hossa put a quick shot on goal that hit the side of the net and caromed out the slot, right to the tape of Kane, who fired it home.

Crawford made 14 saves in the final period, while Luongo stopped 12 pucks to send the game to overtime.

"We were able to kill the five penalties that we took, so that says a lot about our group," Canucks head coach Alain Vigneault said. "We really played well in the third period."
