Pundits: Romney's race more than numbers game - Boston Herald
Mar 21st 2012, 04:01

It's time for Mitt Romney's humdrum, by-the-books campaign to start building some excitement and convince people he's the next leader of the free world, instead of just playing the delegate numbers game as he looks to clinch the nomination, said Republicans and pundits yesterday — even with last night's big win in Illinois.

"He has to do more than just get the most delegates, he has to focus on why he should be the nominee and why he should be president," said Trey Grayson, director of Harvard University's Institute of Politics and former Republican secretary of state in Kentucky. "You need to capture the hearts and minds of the party and the base."

While Romney's delegate lead may make it all but impossible for top rival Rick Santorum to overtake him, even Romney supporters acknowledge that the former Bay State governor isn't inspiring passion in the average voter.

"Is the guy going to be Leo DiCaprio and have everybody swooning? I don't think so. But this is a marathon, not a sprint, and he's doing everything right," said Mark Zaccaria, the Rhode Island GOP chairman and a super delegate who's supporting Romney.

Romney backers have delegate math on their side and have been counting on a sense of inevitability to counter conservatives' lack of enthusiasm. He had snagged a total of 521 delegates ahead of Illinois — with its 69 proportionally assigned delegates — and he's on course this April to reach nearly 800 of the 1,144 required to win the nomination, according to the University of Virginia's Center for Politics. He'll face a tough contest in Louisiana, but many of the April primaries favor Romney, including Washington, D.C., New York and Delaware.

Still, Zaccaria lamented, "Everyone wants to make their nominee a rock star to some extent."

Political commentator William Kristol said rock star status is likely to elude the buttoned-down Romney.

"Who does excite Republicans and conservatives right now? Paul Ryan. He'll be fighting Obama and the Democrats over the next couple of months ... Mitt should volunteer for the fight," Kristol said.

Chip Saltsman, the former presidential campaign manager for Mike Huckabee, said he was discussing Romney's inability to inflame support yesterday morning with Tennessee congressmen and Republican leaders.

"He needs to be who he is and embrace it," said Saltsman. "He's not going to be Ronald Reagan, he's not going to be Bill Clinton, but at the end of the day he has a chance to bring everybody together."
