Portal 2, Battlefield 3 win big at BAFTA video game awards

Valve's Portal 2 was awarded three of the top prizes at this year's British Academy of Film and Television Arts video game awards Friday, with Battlefield 3 and LittleBigPlanet 2 also receiving recognition in multiple categories.

Portal 2 received awards for Best Story, Best Design, and the top prize of the evening: Best Game. Battlefield 3 won for Best Online Multiplayer, Audio Achievement, and the GAME Award, a sponsored, voter's choice award which tallied over 236,000 votes according to the BAFTA website.

LittleBigPlanet 2 was the other big winner of the evening, picking up an award for Best Family Game and another for innovation. The full list of winners can be found at the official site.

BAFTA's top pick for Portal 2 set it apart from other major gaming awards like the Academy of Interactive Arts & Science's Interactive Achievement Awards, the Game Developers Conference's Game Developer's Choice Awards and even Spike TV's Video Game Awards, all of which gave Game of the Year honors to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

The BAFTAs were also the only major gaming award show to pick Battlefield 3 over Modern Warfare 3 in the action/shooter genre. However, Batman: Arkham City was unanimously hailed as the Action/Adventure title of the year across all four award shows, as was Battlefield 3 in the field of audio design.

BAFTA was founded in 1947 as the British Film Academy, and has grown over the years to present awards for television as well as video games. The video game awards were first given out in 1998 when Goldeneye 007 won the top prize. Officially, the organization views video games as a "third pillar" of moving pictures, and tries to position games as an equal of film and television.
