Notre Dame Game Day: Irish eye third straight Sweet 16 - Chicago Tribune Mar 20th 2012, 23:05 Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw. (Matt Cashore/US Presswire photo) |
By Brian Hamilton Tribune reporter 6:11 p.m. CDT, March 20, 2012 SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Not shockingly, home is where the start is for many a Notre Dame women's basketball NCAA tournament run. Four times since 2000, the Irish have advanced to a Sweet 16 from the favorable position of playing its first two games on its home court. And top-seeded Notre Dame has a chance to make it three Sweet 16 runs in a row -- and 10 in the last 16 years -- when it faces No. 8 seed California on Tuesday night. The Irish exploded out of the NCAA tournament gates on Sunday, scoring 11 points in the first 97 seconds against Liberty en route to a 31-point throttling. It's the second-ever meeting between Notre Dame and Cal, with the first also arriving during NCAA tournament play: A 62-59 first-round Irish win in 2007. bchamilton@tribune.com Twitter @ChiTribHamilton This entry passed through the Full-Text RSS service — if this is your content and you're reading it on someone else's site, please read the FAQ at fivefilters.org/content-only/faq.php#publishers.
