KNOXVILLE, Tenn., March 27, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- The Northeast Tennessee Tourism Association (NETTA) announces a season of unique family fun for Spring 2012. Known as "The Sunnyside of Tennessee," Northeast Tennessee is a popular destination for families and travelers to experience the history of "America's First Frontier." This region is recognized as Davy Crockett's birthplace as well as the final burial ground for U.S. President Andrew Johnson, and is home to Bristol Motor Speedway and the Appalachian Caverns.

"We have a lot to offer visitors in Northeast Tennessee. Our rich heritage is proudly displayed at various historical sites across the region, and there is plenty of family fun to be found in our gorgeous parks and an assortment of attractions. A trip to Northeast Tennessee is sure to please the whole family," said Claudia Moody, CEO of NETTA.

Outdoor activities bring many visitors each year to the Northeast Tennessee region. The Upper Nolichucky River -- known as one of the wildest rivers for whitewater rafting in the Southeast -- is located in this area. Families frequent Bays Mountain Park and Planetarium to enjoy hiking and biking trails in the nature reserve, stargazing at the planetarium and a brand new ropes course. Gray Fossil Museum, another location special to the region, features traveling exhibits, and tours of a 5 million year old fossil site found in 2000.

With places like the Greeneville Civil War Monuments and many historic districts, history buffs also have several activities to experience in Northeast Tennessee. The rich culture of this region provides travelers with the opportunity to visit some of the earliest significant sites in the U.S., including Jonesborough and Greeneville: two of the oldest towns in Tennessee.

Must sees for vacationers include Rocky Mount, a living history museum that lets visitors experience the way early settlers lived in the late 1700s. The Barter Theatre offers another glimpse back in time to when settlers could trade livestock for a ticket to the latest play. Shows running during March at the theatre include 9 to 5: The Musical and A Tale of Two Cities.
