Sarah Palin pokes fun at herself on Today - Politico
Apr 3rd 2012, 11:43

Kicking off the highly anticipated battle of Sarah Palin vs. Katie Couric on the morning TV shows Tuesday, the former Alaska governor demonstrated that that she is more than comfortable poking fun of herself on national television.

To start, the first glimpse viewers of the "Today" show got of Palin was her head buried behind an open newspaper.

"Oh, man, she's doing her homework!" NBC's Matt Lauer said, as Palin offered a preview that she might be open to making fun of herself on the show — at least a little.

The quip was a reference to Palin's 2008 interview with Couric in which the former Alaska governor was unable to name any newspapers that she regularly read — just one of the many segments of that famous conversation that quickly went viral during the 2008 cycle.

Palin, who is guest-hosting the popular morning program opposite Couric making a weeklong appearance on "Good Morning America" over at ABC News, eventually poked her head out from the newspaper as the hosts of "Today" welcomed her to the show.

"Governor, it's nice to have you here," Lauer said, before prodding her to share with the audience a "funny story" from the previous day.

"Oh gees, Matt. The nicest lady in the world, she stopped me, asked me where I was heading. I said 30 Rock and she said, 'Oh honey, I told you, Tina Fey is here," Palin said, as the set broke out into laughter.

After the first commercial break, the cameras caught Palin getting ready in a dressing room, as she playfully pretended to scribble some notes on her left hand with a black marker. This, too, was a playful reference to another low point of the 2008 presidential campaign for Palin, when the VP candidate was caught glancing down at handwritten notes on her palm — including the words "Energy," "Tax Cuts" and "Lift American Spirits" — during a speech to the Tea Party Convention.

The hosts of "Today" seemed more than happy to be in on the joke.

"She's taking notes, getting ready for some upcoming segments here," Lauer said. "How's it going so far, governor?"
