For Naked ladies, it' all about fun - Boston Herald

They don't get Naked, but the gals of Naked in a Fishbowl improv comedy troupe don't leave anything to the imagination.

You want to know what women are thinking? Bonnie, Sara, Sophie, Chloe, Alice and Ruby bare it all in their no-subject-is-taboo, off-the-cuff performances in New York that are filmed for the Web.

But local improv fans will get to sneak a peek at Naked in a Fishbowl on Saturday at ImprovBoston during the Women in Comedy Festival.

"We have no clue what we're going to do on stage, only that we'll be in Boston," said Naked lady Lauren Seikaly. "We're going to have to make up some reason that we're all in Boston and probably use our experiences while in town for the show that night. Are the Red Sox [team stats] playing that weekend?"

While in New York, the players use their everyday experiences as wives and mothers, singletons and career gals for their one-hour, unscripted shtick that's relatable, unlike the travails of Carrie Bradshaw and her "Sex and the City" posse.

"We're together all the time as girlfriends, which makes a huge difference," said Lauren, who plays Bonnie, a wife and mother with monogamy issues.

But when the Nakeds go on the road — like to Boston or a trip to Edinburgh's Fringe Festival last summer — the only part of the show that's planned is the premise.

"When we went to Scotland, we planned that it was Sara's bachelorette party, but Bonnie had another reason — to look up her ex-lover, Billy," Seikaly said. "We pounded out a new show every day for a week. That was exhausting."

But the kilt-wearers got a kick out of the Fishbowl's brand of funny and named the troupe's work the "Best of the Fest."

Lauren said the trip to Scotland proved that if an international audience gets their brand of humor, it shouldn't be too hard to franchise the concept to other cities.

"It would be great to have shows going in Boston, Los Angeles, even India," she said. "All you need is a group of girlfriends."

As for making the move from webisodes to TV, the gals tried that back in 2005, but no network would accept a strictly improvisational show. FCC rules and all that ...

"How can we tell them how each episode is going to end if we don't know?" she asked. "We know that the comedy comes from the fact that nothing is planned."
