LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Murray State wore bright yellow sneakers in its N.C.A.A. tournament victory over Colorado State on Thursday, matching the trim on its uniforms. The shoes were the second-most noticeable aspect about the Racers.
The most notable was the wide and tall Afro of Murray State's Ed Daniel, a haircut so distinctive it has its own following. There is the inevitable Twitter account — @ed_hair — and Murray fans have started wearing wigs to games. There were also Mr. Ed T-shirts, bearing a silhouette of the hair, made up during the season. Daniel, a 6-foot-7 forward, wants the N.B.A. to consider measuring him as a 6-foot-11 player for draft purposes.
Daniel said it did not create a stir around Murray when he started letting the hair grow last May. His teammates tease him and he slaps away their hands when they reach to touch the hair for fun.
Asked about how much he stands out on a campus in a quiet part of western Kentucky, Daniel said" "Everybody is really used to me; I've been there three years now. A lot of fans like to see it most every game."
Murray coach Steve Prohm almost asked Daniel to cut his hair, but Prohm was reading a book by Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski and decided to let it go.
"He said only fight certain battles," Prohm said. "If I was a 48-year old coach maybe I would have said cut it. But I'm 37, still a young guy."
