WNIT Game Thread: UW at Oregon State - The Seattle Times (blog)
Mar 21st 2012, 01:48

WILLIAMS STARTS: Mo-Will started the second half as Argens works out her knee in the Gil Coliseum corridor. She's wearing a black sleeve over the left knee and doing extra warups as the second half begins. UW is down 31-27 with 17:07 on the clock.

HALFTIME: We're all tied at 25 points apiece, Rogers grabbing five offensive rebounds to turn them into putbacks. She leads UW with 12 points, scoring two from the FT line. She also has five turnovers as OSU focuses its coverage on the 6-foot-3 post. Still, Rogers scored nine of her team's final 11 points to close the gap. UW is shooting 28.1 percent from the field overall, however, and 7-for-12 from the FT line. Bright has a lot to do with UW's struggles getting the ball in the hoop, blocking five shots. The saving grace is UW outrebounding OSU 22-18. But the Beavers are shooting 41.7 percent from the field, led by Marchbanks' 13 points. OSU has 12 miscues, only giving up eight points off the foiled plays. Neither team is getting much from its bench, but UW senior F Mollie Williams does have four rebounds and made both FT to tie the game at the end of the half. UW needs to execute better and make its FTs if it plans on continuing the season.

ARGENS HURT?: Argens collided with an opponent and was slow to rise, limping on the ensuing offensive play. UW coach Kevin McGuff pulled her and she's having her surgically repaired left knee evaluated now. UW is down 25-23.

SLOPPY PLAY: OSU is just throwing away opportunities. They have seven so far in the half and only two were really forced. The others were long passes or players bumping into each other. UW has five and isn't taking advantage of the sloppy play. They are dow 23-19 with 3:35 on the clock. Rogers leads with 10 points.

SHOWING INTEREST: Davis dropped a could of pretty jumpers and UW is getting some defensive stops to wiggle its way back in the game. Dawgs trail 15-11 with 9:17 remaining in the half.

RUN STOPPED: The Beavers were on a 10-0 run until UW sophomore Kellie McCann-Smith got the ball inside to Rogers for a score. The Huskies are down 14-7 with 11:59 on the clock. Feels like OSU wants this win more.

CROWDED: Rogers has back-to-back turnovers, getting crowded in the paint. The bobbled steps have led to offense on the other end as Marchbanks' swoop threw the paint for a layin and three-pointers by Gibson and Indendi have OSU up 12-5 with 13:54 left in the first half. The crowd is getting into the game, too. It's no Kennel (Gonzaga) or KeyArena (Storm), but it's loud.

SWEET DISH: Argens should be stuffed with all the dishes Davis is giving her tonight. The freshman PG has two no-looks to the senior post to help give UW and early 5-4 lead with 17:13 left in the opening half.

Pac-12 teams in the postseason are slowly dwindling. California lost to Notre Dame 73-62 in the second round of the NCAA tournament and Washington is knocking out the rest in the Women's National Invitation Tournament.

Well, the Huskies are trying. Arizona State actually lost its opening round game on its own (77-62 to Pacific) and UW defeated Utah on Sunday to advance to the WNIT third-round against Oregon State on Tuesday. Much like against the Utes, the Huskies (19-13) are trying to get their first win of the season against the Beavers (20-12).

Miscues and passive defense led to five point losses to OSU in December (60-55) and February (78-73). UW appears to have cleaned up it play, especially defensively. But OSU has the type of depth and outside shooting that could frustrate Washington.

The winner plays either San Diego or Texas Tech, which faces off on Thursday to advance. Due to RPI rankings, the quarterfinal matchup would most likely be on the road this weekend. But the WNIT makes the final decision and school bidding (read money) and attendance also plays a part.

UW's seniors don't care. They've fallen in love with the season and want to continue playing as long as possible. OSU has a senior in G Earlysia Marchbanks, who'd also like to continue playing. According to reports, she writes "Last Chance" on her wrist as a reminder to give her all.

But it has to end for one team Tuesday, let's get you started for which with the starting lineups:

HUSKIES F Charmaine Barlow F Mackenzie Argens C Regina Rogers G Jazmine Davis G Mercedes Wetmore

BEAVERS F Ali Gibson F Alyssa Martin C Patricia Bright G Sage Indendi G Earlysia Marchbanks

Tonight's officials are Cathi Cornell, Bart Baldwin, and Jim Morrell.
