Toad Fish Fun Run celebrates eighth race; donates earnings to American Cancer ... - The Bridgeton News - NJ.com

BRIDGETON — John Kelly once made a bet that he could outrun Neil Riley from Bridgeton to the Toad Fish Bar and Grill in Fairton.

The two Irishmen were sitting at the Toad Fish bar eight years ago when they decided to hold a St. Patrick's Day run where spectators could bet on who could outrun who and make it back to the Toad Fish and down a beer before the other.

Kelly lost the bet.

The following year, in the spirit of St. Patrick, the two decided to race again, but put the earnings toward the American Cancer Society, as Kelly's step-father had succumbed to cancer.

"When people heard about the cause we were donating to, they wanted to race, too," Kelly recalled Saturday afternoon just before saddling his bicycle for the eighth race.

He has had to race on his bicycle for the past two years because of an injured foot and ankle following a fall from a tree stand while hunting.

"Neil (Riley) outruns me every year since the first, but I have my bike this year so maybe that will better my chances," Kelly said.

Kelly was joined by his daughters Jordanna, 7, and Jaelynn, 3. Jordanna brought along her bicycle for her first chance to participate in the race.

"It's fun to be in the race now with my daughter. It's her first year," Kelly said.

Riley was excited to be a part of the Toad Fish Fun Run for another year.

"It's for a great cause," Riley said. "And we don't discriminate on runners. We've got seasoned runners, we've got people on bikes, we've got people pushing strollers. It's a good group."

Riley was pleased with the turnout and the amount donated to the ACS.

"We've had about 100 sign-ups for the day," Riley said. "We'll probably donate close to $2,500 to the cancer society."

With the temperate conditions, the Toad Fish was open outside the back of the building, giving runners a chance to relax and feel like they're on a tropical vacation before the run.

"We've had a lot of cooperation from the Bridgeton police and the Sheppard's Bus Service," said Jeff French, manager of the Toad Fish.

The runners were bused to the Broad Street School where they ran 2.6 miles down Bridgeton-Fairton Road before finishing back at the Toad Fish.

Before the race, some of the runners had a drink of water, some a drink of beer in St. Patty's day spirit.

Rosa Brambila, 28, of Fairton, was excited for her first race at the Toad Fish.

"I used to bartend here and saw the run, but never participated," Brambila said. "My boyfriend brought me out this time."

Her boyfriend, Greg Betterelli, 27, of Hopewell, came in second place Saturday during the run. It was his third race with the Toad Fish.

"The weather is always different each year," Betterelli said of the 70 degree heat. "One year it rained and it was really cold. But this is a good day to run."

Thomas Seeley, Toad Fish owner, echoed the sentiments of good weather.

"It's beautiful outside today," Seeley said.

"(The Toad Fish Fun Run) has raised tens of thousands of dollars in donations over the years for the American Cancer Society, which is a worthy cause," Seeley said. "We're proud to host this great benefit."

At the finish line, the winner was 30-year-old Matt Waldo.

"It was a lot of fun," Waldo said.

On his racing technique: "My two pre-race Guinnesses helped," he said, sipping a post-race/victory Guinness for St. Patty's day.
