Practices for Fun Run to begin April - Brazil Times

Local children have an opportunity to get healthy while having fun this spring.

Subway, the Rotary Club of Brazil and Riddell National Bank are sponsoring a 1-mile Healthy Kids Fun Run Saturday, May 19, at 11 a.m., at the Forest Park Pavilion.

"The purpose of the event is to promote health and the benefit of exercise," Coordinator Linda Messmer, a member of Rotary Club of Brazil, said. "We also want to promote family togetherness. We want parents to bring their children and participate with them."

Walking is also a part of the program.

Each child who participates in the race will receive a free T-shirt, a participation medal, a governor's fitness award certificate and lunch.

On race day, Subway is donating sandwiches, Kroger will donate bananas and First Christian Church Bible Bowl is donating bottles of water for participants.

The healthy kids program is for children ages 5-12 and will last four weeks, including eight sessions on Mondays and Thursdays beginning April 23. Each session will begin at 6 p.m., at the Forest Park Pavilion.

There will be a short instructional period before the practice.

Each practice session will include a guest speaker to talk about subjects such as: Pacing yourself, warming up and cooling down, safety, benefits of exercise on the heart, proper clothing to wear while exercising and more.

During the sessions, Messmer encourages the children to continue exercises at home on their own at least three more days a week. She said she wants to teach the children how to set goals and map out a plan to obtain those goals.

This is the second year for the Fun Run, and Messmer said she told the children last year that the race is all about fun.

"Last year, I said, 'This is a secret, but it does make you healthy,' to the kids and they all giggled," Messmer told The Brazil Times. "It's not a job to get healthy; it's just a side effect of having fun like this."

Last year, Messmer hoped for a turnout of 25 children on race day.

"At the sessions, we averaged 39 kids each time," Messmer said. "On race day, we had 60 children participate. So this year, I'm hoping for at least 61 so we can say we grew."

Children or parents can pick up an application at any of the eight Clay Community schools including Cornerstone, as well as Riddell National Bank, Subway or the YMCA.

All applications must be signed by a parent or guardian and turned in by Thursday, April 24, at the child's school or by mailing them to Subway/Rotary Fun Run, 8254 Jade Ct., Brazil, Ind., 47834.

"It's a very educational program," Messmer said. "The main benefits are to have fun, get healthy and spend quality time with family."

The sessions will be on April 23, 26, and 30, and May 3, 7, 10, 14 and 17.
