Sunday's rainy weather didn't stop the Van Zandt family from having a good time together.

When plans to go to the park got washed away, Charles Van Zandt brought his three daughters to watch a showing of "Sea Monsters" at the Mayborn Planetarium and Space Theater in Killeen.

"It's just a fun experience," said Van Zandt, of their second trip to the theater over the weekend. "My girls really like it."

His 7-year-old daughter, Kalani, said she enjoyed watching Saturday's presentation of "Legends of the Night Sky: Orion."

"My favorite part was when they showed us the night sky and we got to find Orion," she said. The Big Dipper, though, is her favorite constellation.

"There's nothing like it in the area," said Rufus Walker, planetarium assistant, of the full dome movie screen. "You can't get that experience anywhere else."

While "Sea Monsters" is a National Geographic movie that follows the life of a dinosaur as scientists assume it was based on its fossil, and others teach about the stars and universe, there are also laser light shows to the music of Pink Floyd, U2 and Led Zeppelin.

"It makes educational stuff fun to learn," said Walker.

"I like the fact that they show educational movies and that it's really geared toward families," said Tasha Young, while waiting to see "Sea Monsters" with her husband and two children. "It's something different to do."

She said they've seen everything from Sesame Street-themed space movies to the laser light shows.

"They like to watch the different figures that the lasers make," said Young.

Aside from movie screenings inside the dome-like theater, the planetarium also offers visitors a chance to see free exhibits and hands-on science demonstrations that rotate monthly.
