Eighteen-year-old Danbury High School senior Alexis Koukos said she has always had a soft spot for those who are less fortunate.
In 2010 she helped organized a fashion show that raised $2,000 for Save the Children. And this year, Alexis -- along with classmate Natasha Veloso -- has organized a benefit to help Housatonic Habitat for Humanity, another nonprofit organization.
"Building a Better Future: A Night of Fun and Fashion 2012" will take place Tuesday, March 27, at the Amber Room Colonnade in Danbury.
Thirty Danbury High School students will model casual and dressy clothing loaned to them by Danbury retailers, including Cache, Francesca's Collections, Macy's, Mandee, Majesty, Hot Topic and David's Bridal.
Entertainment will be provided by Standby, a rock band of Danbury High School students that includes Garrett Rose, Phil Grabover, Brandon George, John Rumph and Michael Mosca.
There will also be a meet-and-greet with the Western Connecticut Militia football team, a minor league team in Danbury. Hairstylists from Paul Mitchell in Danbury have volunteered to do the girls' hair and makeup. And there will be raffle prizes. All proceeds will benefit Housatonic Habitat for Humanity.
"The girls will get an idea of what kind of dresses they want to wear for the senior prom, which is on May 25," Alexis said.
Alexis and Natasha conducted auditions to find students who were interested in modeling the clothing. They've also organized rehearsals, which have lasted up to two hours at a time.
Housatonic Habitat for Humanity in Danbury is a local chapter of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit that builds affordable homes for people in need.
"Hillary Clinton said it takes a village to raise a child. For us, it takes a village to build a Habitat home," said Mary Aly, executive director of Housatonic Habitat for Humanity in Danbury.
"It's not just a matter of finding a family and building a house. We need volunteers, donors and churches to participate," she said.
Housatonic Habitat for Humanity in Danbury was founded 21 years ago, serving Danbury and 16 surrounding towns.
"We have seven homes in the process of being built. There are currently 21 families in Habitat homes, which are located throughout Danbury, Newtown and Brookfield.
"We love events like these, because not only do they raise money, but they raise visibility with families who might volunteer, donate and involve their friends," said Aly, a Wilton resident.
"We chose Habitat for Humanity because there are so many people who are losing their homes in this economy. We want to do something to help them," Alexis said.
"This should be a fun time, when all high-schoolers come together. It's a great feeling knowing one little show can help out so many people. Just going from jotting ideas on paper in the fall, to having it all come together, is amazing and great to see," she said.
"I feel like I've been so blessed with everything I have in my life that I want to give something to those who aren't as fortunate," Alexis added.
"When you give, it's that feeling you get in the bottom of your stomach. The smile on the person's face is the best thing. I wouldn't want anything else in return," said Natasha, 17.
