BRIDGEPORT—

— There are a number of ways to measure Geno Auriemma's legacy at UConn, the best being the seven national championships his program has won.

But Saturday's victory over Prairie View A&M in the first round of the NCAA Tournament provided yet another. It was UConn's 30th victory of the season. The Huskies have done that in seven consecutive seasons, 17 times in the Auriemma era.

"It's amazing,'' Auriemma said. "We always used to joke that 20 was the magic number. You know, they used to write in coaches' obituaries that, `He won 20 games' or `she won 20 games X-number of times.' Now, you win 20 at UConn and it gets you fired.

"So looking back at the way we've done things, the way we've played, there's a certain consistency. I'd like to think that if people watch us that they see similarities year after year, the kind of kids we bring in, the style of play we have. I've got to be honest, 30 wins is a big deal for us. That sets you apart from a lot of other teams, if you can do that."

Keeping Watch On Hayes

Auriemma said again that his decision to keep Tiffany Hayes on the bench in the second half Saturday was based on his desire to keep additional stress off of her right foot. Hayes apparently was not happy about it, but she has said there is a stress fracture on the top of her foot. It kept her out of practice for over a week after UConn won the Big East title game March 6.

"`Yeah, it was a little bit sore at halftime [Saturday]," Auriemma said. "So I asked Rosemary [Ragle, UConn's athletic trainer], 'what about we just sit her out the second half?' [Ragle] said, `Fine. If you can do it, that's great.' We checked on her again after the game and she said she felt great. So we're right back at it [Monday].''

Hayes played 17 minutes in Saturday's 83-47 win over Prairie View, with seven points and three assists. She was 1-of-6 from the field, 5-of-5 from the free-throw line.

Great Future

The more you listen to Auriemma talk about Breanna Stewart, the high school player of the year from Cicero-North Syracuse [N.Y.], the more you understand why he has so much confidence about the future of his program once she arrives next season with 6-2 forward Morgan Tuck and 5-7 guard Moriah Jefferson.

"It's unfair to have her play against those high school kids," Auriemma said. "There isn't a college team in America she wouldn't be starting for.

"God bless her, I hope she keeps getting better. I don't think there's ever been anybody like that in high school, that I have seen. I mean, a 6-4 kid who can do all of that and make three-pointers and pass like she does?"

After scoring 42 points with 23 rebounds Friday in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association AA championship semifinals, she had 13 points, 13 rebounds and 13 blocked shots in a 62-48 win over Penfield in the championship game.

Doty Time

Much has been made of the recent offensive struggles of Bria Hartley, Kelly Faris and Tiffany Hayes, but there is no Husky struggling more offensively now than junior Caroline Doty.

Doty has been held scoreless in three straight games, 4 of 6 and 6 of the past 9 games. She has just five field goals since playing 35 minutes at Louisville on Feb. 7 and is shooting just 4 of 22 from three-point range. … There was a report last week in a Massachusetts newspaper that both UConn associate head coach Chris Dailey and Hartford coach Jen Rizzotti would be on Providence's list to replace Phil Seymore. Dailey said Sunday she is not interested in the job.

Home Away From Home

Kansas State women's basketball coach Deb Patterson seems resigned to the fact that the Wildcats are perennial 8-9 seeds and have been sent to Connecticut three times in the past four tournaments.

"The facts are, we are always in UConn's bracket," she said. "What's exciting to me is we finally put ourselves in position to have the opportunity to advance. We are in Connecticut and playing Connecticut."
