Flowers are springing up, trees are bursting with pink and white blossoms, and in stores, bright cellophane-wrapped baskets are springing up in aisles and shelves are bursting with bags of chocolate eggs, sugar chicks and bunnies. Spring is here, and Easter is coming, when Christians around the world celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The egg is widely used as a symbol of the start of new life, as the chick hatches from the egg. In many countries, the egg is seen by followers of Christianity as a symbol of resurrection: The egg is like the silent tomb, just waiting for the resurrected Christ to burst forth from it.

In the Orthodox and Eastern Catholic churches, Easter eggs are dyed red to represent the blood shed by Christ in his sacrificial death on the cross. A tradition among followers of Eastern Christianity says that when Jesus' follower Mary Magdalene came to his tomb, she was bringing cooked eggs to share with the other women accompanying her, and when she beheld the risen Christ, the eggs in her basket miraculously turned brilliant red.

As for the Easter Bunny, the rabbit is an ancient symbol of fertility, which is associated with spring. The holiday was originally a pagan Anglo-Saxon celebration of worship of Eastre, the goddess of fertility and springtime whose earthly symbol was the rabbit. As Christianity overtook the British Isles, the pagan holiday, which occurred about the same time as Easter, was incorporated into Christian celebrations. The fertility of the rabbit is associated with the springing forth of abundant new life in spring — and, as Christians believe, with the abundant new life that believers find through the resurrection of Christ.

This Saturday, Savage folks will be able to get into the Easter frame of mind at two local events. The First Baptist Church of Savage is holding its 10th annual "Resurrection Egg Hunt" for children up through fifth grade, at noon on the Carroll Baldwin Commons (Foundry and Baltimore streets), or inside the Carroll Baldwin Hall if it rains. Bring a bag or basket to collect your treats. For more information, contact the church at 301-725-3944.

The Savage Volunteer Fire Co. is holding "Lunch with the Easter Bunny" from noon to 2 p.m. at the fire hall, 8925 Lincoln St., in Savage. The cost is $5 per person and includes hotdog, chips, cookies, punch and ice tea. There will be craft activities. Reservations are not required. For additional information, call 301-725-6409 or 410-258-7394.

Help plan Savage festival

The Savage Community Association will meet at 7 p.m. April 2 at the Carroll Baldwin Hall, corner of Foundry and Baltimore streets. The group currently is planning the annual Savage Days festival, slated for June 2. All Savage residents are welcome to participate. Come and see how you can get involved in planning this fun community event.
