Game No. 69: Turco starts for Bruins vs. Lightning - Boston.com (blog)
Mar 13th 2012, 13:39

TAMPA -- Riddled with injuries and the playoffs on their doorstep, the Bruins Tuesday night take on the Lightning in the first of two Florida stops in 48 hours. They will be in Sunrise Thursday night to face the Panthers.

It won't be known until game time whether regulars Patrice Bergeron (lower-body injury) or Adam McQuaid (upper-body), both of whom exited the lineup during Sunday's 5-2 loss in Pittsburgh, will be able to suit up Tuesday. Coach Claude Julien said both will be game-time decisions.

Update: Julien says he will dress 13 forwards and 7 defensemen for the pregame warmup, then decide if Bergeron and/or McQuaid are game-ready.

''We want to be careful here and not use someone at 70 percent, and then lose them for a week or two.''

Tim Thomas, pulled after allowing three goals in the first period on Sunday, figured to be the starter. But Julien made it clear Monday that he was impressed with Marty Turco's relief work in Pittsburgh, and Julien will give him the start vs. the Lightning.

''Time for [Turco] to come in and help us out,'' said Julien. ''He's in decent form and I like his competitiveness, so he has to step up for us tonight and help us win a hockey game.''

''It's a heavy schedule,'' Julien said after Monday's workout. ''We are going to need to lean on Marty.''

Turco enjoyed the NHL re-entry, his first action in North America since guarding the Blackhawks net last season after his tenured run with the Dallas Stars.

''I got thrown into the fire pretty good,'' said Turco, who turned back 20 of 22 shots by the Penguins. ''Other than Stanley Cup playoffs, to start like that, it helped to jump in there and get back at it. I'd had a hiatus for a while. Overall it was good. I did feel better than I thought I might. That game was quick, even for NHL pace. I could tell it was ramped up pretty good, with a playoff atmosphere.''

Puck drop: 7:35 p.m.

Record: Bruins, 40-25-3; Lightning, 31-30-7.

TV/radio info: NESN (Jack Edwards, Andy Brickley, Naoko Funayama), 98.5 The Sports Hub (Dave Goucher, Bob Beers)

Projected lineup: Milan Lucic-David Krejci-Tyler Seguin Brad Marchand-Patrice Bergeron-Jordan Caron Benoit Pouliot-Chris Kelly-Brian Rolston Lane MacDermid-Gregory Campbell-Shawn Thornton

Zdeno Chara-Johnny Boychuk Dennis Seidenberg-Joe Corvo Andrew Ference-Greg Zanon

Marty Turco Tim Thomas

Injured: Nathan Horton, Rich Peverley, Adam McQuaid Healthy scratch: Trent Whitfield

Notes: This will be Brian Rolston's ninth game in Black and Gold, the former Bruin reacquired at the trade deadline to add some depth. In eight games, he's picked up a lone assist. ''Right now,'' said Julien, noting that Rolston hadn't been used much with the Islanders, ''we're asking a lot of him. It's tough for him to jump in and play a lot.'' Rolston has been used at all three forward spots and has seen some work at the point on the power play ... The injuries were coming fast and furious in Pittsburgh, to the point, said Julien, he at times requested the referees allow him a few extra seconds between line changes when the whistle was blown. ''You don't want to take advantage of it,'' said Julien. ''But you also want [the referees] to be at least sensitive to what you are going through; we were short.'' .... Lucic, Krejci and Seguin each have nine points in the last seven games ... The Bruins are 12-14-2 over the last 28 games and have given up the first goal in 8 of the last 10 games. In 13 of those 28 games, they never had a lead, going 0-11-2.
