THIS year's annual Fun Walk to raise money for various local charities and good causes will be taking place on Sunday, May 27, at Barleylands Farm.
Once again the aim is for the event to be a fun afternoon for all the family. There will be live music, a superb barbecue, other refreshments and a large barn for charity stalls – the objective being to raise awareness as well as money. Gateway FM will also be conducting an outside broadcast on the day from the walk.

CHARITY EFFORT: Last year's charity Fun Walk, held in May
There are two walks to choose from. One is three miles and takes in the circular public walk around Crays Hill. The second is a much shorter walk within Barleylands Farm and is suitable for toddlers, families and disabled people. Both start and finish at Barleylands Farm. The event starts at noon with the opening of the barbecue. There is then a photo shoot to thank our bonus pot sponsors at 12.45pm, with the walk then starting at 1pm. Finish time is around 3pm.
Participating charities and good causes will raise money through their own sponsorship efforts in the run-up to the walk. Sponsorship forms are supplied.
In addition, because of the generosity of corporate and individual sponsors, each charity and good cause will receive an additional bonus to their sponsorship – and this will depend on how much money they have raised. Simply put, the more money raised the bigger the bonus will be! In 2011, the bonus pot accounted for 85 per cent of total monies raised.
Each year the walk goes from strength to strength, with many local charities and good causes now viewing this as their main fundraising event of the year. It has raised over £339,000 since its inception in 2002, and last year broke all records by raising over £75,000 for 88 projects. We hope to break this record again this year; so I urge you to register and join us at Barleylands Farm on May 27. You can register by calling 07544 324218 by May 1. Further details will then be sent out.
On a personal note, this year I shall be raising money at the Fun Walk for Myeloma UK in memory of a dear friend and colleague Cllr Steve Horgan.
Steve recently died after bravely fighting a nine-year battle with cancer. He was only 47. Steve was with me from the start of my political career in Basildon and Billericay, and volunteered to be part of my campaign team during general elections. He was a loyal and principled friend and he will be greatly missed.
