Fun! Fun! Minigolf Touch!: Review

Fun! Fun! Minigolf was Shin'en's first game for Nintendo's downloadable WiiWare service, now they're back with a refined version of the game Fun! Fun! Minigolf TOUCH! for their début on the 3DS' eShop. The game costs $4.99 (£4.50) on the digital store but is it worth the price?

The game is a single player only arcade golf sim where your aim to to hit the ball into the hole while avoiding the obstacles that stand in your way. Instead of getting steadily closer to the hole with each stroke you are required to hit the ball within the designated safe areas surrounding each hole straight from the tee off spot. Failure to do so will leave you out of bounds and needing to retake the shot. There are no penalties for hitting a shot out of bounds but there is little room for error if you want to achieve the strict medal rankings on offer in each cup.

Shin'en are known for their high level of presentation and that continues to be the case here. The game features an upbeat soundtrack, it's menus are clean and easy to navigate and the cartoon like graphics look great. However, the 3D effect, whilst noticeable, is very slight and doesn't really add much to the visuals. You have two control options available to you, button and touch, and both are solid. Button control has you aim your shot using the circle pad and then using timed presses the a button in a power metre common to the genre. With the touch controls you aim your shot by spinning a white circle on the touch screen. You then drag an on screen club back to determine the power and then forwards for accuracy.

There are three courses on offer with a total of 27 holes and each course has three cups to play through, Cup, Pro Cup and Super Cup. The courses remain the same in each however the layout and obstacles are different as each cup increases the challenge. There are also 9 trick shot courses in which your aim is to collect all of the coins scattered around the course with a bonus multiplier for rebounding your shots of of the boundaries. When you first start playing you will only have one cup available to you, everything else has to be unlocked via an in game shop with the use of coins earned from your efforts on the course. You can also unlock the ability to play using your one of your Mii's an 8 bit version of the soundtrack and a few alternate clubs in the shop. The amount of content in the shop is a bit lacking and high prises that require you to go back and replay previous courses seem like an attempt to make the game last longer. Even so you'll have unlocked everything there is on offer within few hours.

The longevity of Fun! Fun! Minigolf TOUCH! will be decided by how keen you are on going back to get those gold medals and beat your high scores. While getting the gold medal in each of the cups does prove to be a fun challenge it will only hold the interest of most for so long. For that reason you likely won't still be playing this game a month down the line and the lack of any multiplayer component doesn't help in that regard. What you do get however is certainly a challenging and enjoyable experience which is worth the investment especially considering it's low price.
