PITTSBURGH -- Devils' defenseman Marek Zidlicky was burned twice by Sidney Crosby.
Goalie Martin Brodeur was hijacked by Evgeni Malkin behind his net, resulting in a Penguins goal 64 seconds into the game.
And defenseman Mark Fayne made the wrong decision to step up for an attempted hit at the red line on what resulted in a critical second period goal from Pascal Dupuis.
So how did the Devils assess their 5-2 loss to the Penguins Sunday night at the Consol Energy Center?
"Individual mistakes cost us the game," coach Pete DeBoer said. "On the first goal, Crosby's goal and on a few of their chances. You can't do that against that team."
It was not, the Devils felt, as lopsided as the score, which included an empty net goal from Malkin.
"I didn't think it was a bad game," Brodeur said. "I thought we played decent. We gave them too many good opportunities. They were able to split our D a lot and got chances off that."
Reason to worry? Especially if they eventually face the Penguins in the playoffs?
"I like us against anybody if we're playing the right way," DeBoer said.
But they didn't and now have six games left in the regular season.
"You want to get into the playoffs as soon as possible," Brodeur pointed out, "and feeling good about yourself."
