Cookbook review: Fun meals easy enough to make for every day - Long Beach Press-Telegram

The late television chef and cookbook author Julia Child used to say: If you can't stand the fun, get out of the kitchen.

Well, OK, maybe she didn't literally say that but she certainly seemed to have fun on her "The French Chef" show (for a sample, check out "The French Chef's Julia Child's Chicken" on YouTube).

You, too, can heighten your enthusiasm for cooking with "Food Network Magazine 1,000 Easy Recipes: Super Fun Food for Every Day" (Hyperion, $24.99).

Flip anywhere in the newly published book and you'll find eye-catching photographs that beg you to look at the recipe. The book kept falling open to the page of a white bowl filled with cream-color ravioli, sprinkled with sage leaves and chopped walnuts. Mmmm . It's the recipe for "Ravioli With Sage-Walnut Butter" in the Pizza & Pasta section.

"Hash Brown Eggs" in the Eggs & Bacon section fell open, too. Topped with fresh salsa, what's not to like?

There also was the two-page spread with eight cookie recipes: "Classic Chocolate," "Classic Sugar," "Butterscotch," "Chocolate-Malted," "Classic Chocolate-Chip," "Fig Pinwheels," "Coconut Chunk" and "Peanut Butter." The "Orange-Anise Shortbread" recipe on the previous page caught my eye as well.

I hands-down prefer cookbooks with photos so the book had me at "Lemony Salmon Burgers" (page 171).

Photos aside, though, you should be able to find inspiration for a twist on whatever you cook every day.

It's all about ideas and getting excited to try "Lobster Salad Panini," "Chorizo-Shrimp Kebabs," "Red Sangria" and even grilled skewered "Smoky Okra."

For example, in the Burgers & Dogs section (yes, there is a paragraph on ways to cook hot dogs), there are 37 ideas for making a dog hot during the week. How about a "Swedish Dog" (lingonberry jam is one topping) or "French Poodles" (brie and cornichons)? The recipes are short and sweet.

You'll also find ideas for cocktails, crostini, dips, hamburgers, nachos, pancakes, pizza, potato salads, potato skins, smoothies, soups, vegetable sides and even tea sandwiches.

If you don't know much about the processes of cooking or what a colander is, this isn't the book that will teach you. It's a cookbook to inspire you to enjoy your everyday meals. Bon App tit indeed.
