SEVERAL national athletes could feature in this year's Standard Chartered Fun Run in Putrajaya next month as the event builds on its debut success last year after attracting 5,000 runners.

Two new categories have been added to the programme for the May 26 event held in conjunction with the National Youth Day festivities with the debut of the 8km national and international open runs.

That has got national youth footballers Nazmi Faiz Mansor and Wan Zack Haikal Wan Nor and national bowler Zandra Aziela Ibrahim Hakimi contemplating having a go at the run.

"If it does not clash with training or games then I can take part. It's a good event with lots of participation and if it is possible I would like to run," said Wan Zack as Nazmi and Zandra also contemplated putting their names in.

All three were present on Thursday along with bowlers Zulmazaran Zulkifli and Nur Aiman Khairuddin at the launch of the Fun Run in Putrajaya.

Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said he hoped more private entities would follow Standard Chartered's lead in holding healthy events for the masses.

"The private sector has an important role to play in developing and organising sporting events. So I would like to thank Standard Chartered for organising this Fun Run which blends nicely into the National Youth Day celebration," said Ahmad Shabery.

In keeping with the youth theme, only those below 40 years of age are eligible for the Fun Run with Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia chief executive Osman Morad expecting close to 8,000 runners to enter.

"Last year was a tremendous success with about 5,000 runners taking part. This year we are aiming for 8,000 and the response has been terrific with 2,000 registered already.

"For more serious runners, we have added the 8km run and this presents an opportunity for those running the 10km or 21km in the KL Marathon (on June 24)," said Morad.

Besides the 8km events, the existing categories include 5km for juniors (16-25 years), 5km for seniors (26-40 years), 3km fun run for a reason split into the costume run, celebrity run and special run for the disabled.
