Colbert pokes fun at Grassley's tweets - DesMoinesRegister.com

If mockery is the sincerest form of flattery, then Twitter fan Sen. Chuck Grassley has a follower in late-night satirist Stephen Colbert.

Colbert, the host of "The Colbert Report" on Comedy Central, took to his show this week to replicate the tweeting style of the "78-year-old cyberpunk" whose "minimalist Twitter feed and artistic aversion to typing" caught the comedian's attention and prompted him to emulate the Iowa lawmaker.

On a recent "Colbert Report" episode, Colbert praised the senator's "avant-garde, stream-of-consciousness poetry" in this Grassleyesque tweet: "i m so xitEd 2 twt l1ke mY h3ro gr asslee u ess A!!! you ez Ey!!" That translates to, "I'm so excited to tweet like my hero Grassley. U.S.A. U.S.A."

Colbert proceeded to send out about a dozen more Grassley-style tweets and encouraged his viewers to send similar tweets "celebrating Chuck Grassley's artistic breakthrough" under the hashtag #igotthetweetslike grassley.

Grassley took the humor in stride. "I appreciate anybody who can understand my shorthand, and who can help me get more followers!" he told The Des Moines Register.

Chad Hart, an assistant professor in the department of economics at Iowa State University, said Grassley's propensity to tweet has most likely benefited him by getting his name out in the news, especially among younger constituents who are more likely to be on Twitter.

"I think what you're seeing here through Senator Grassley is that Twitter and other social media sites are becoming a major way to reach out to various people, to get your ideas and issues out front," Hart said.

"For him it's not going to do him any real harm with his core constituency," Hart said. "When you look at Senator Grassley's support in Iowa, not a lot of them would switch their support away from him based on Stephen Colbert making a few jokes about him."

Grassley has drawn fire recently for speaking out against comments by President Barack Obama about the Supreme Court, seeming to refer to Obama in a recent tweet as "stupid."

The comment came after Obama said he was confident the high court would not take the "unprecedented, extraordinary step" of overturning the controversial federal health care law, called Obamacare by critics. To do so, Obama said, would scuttle "a law that was passed by a strong majority of a democratically elected Congress."

In his tweet posted last week, Grassley said he was not "outraged" about Obama's comments questioning the Supreme Court's independence because the American people "r not stupid as this x prof of con law."
