Fun, fantasy and clothing galore - Edmonton Journal

Styling competitions, celebrity appearances and designer showcases had Edmonton's glitterati flocking to Old Strathcona this week for eight fashion-fuelled days of local and international flair. There was live music, fantasy hair and makeup and, of course, clothing galore.

But like the adage says, all good things must come to an end.

Western Canada Fashion Week (WCFW) wrapped up its spring season Thursday night with an eclectic show spanning Alberta, New York City and Ukraine.

Local design veterans Stanley Carroll, Malorie Urbanovitch, Maggie Walt and Derek Jagodzinsky wowed audiences with their signature styles throughout the week, while newcomers Angélique Chmielewski and Ravi Gill, a.k.a. DrailD, delighted with their fresh perspectives and daring designs.

"DrailD was very sexy, but at the same time it was really well designed," fashion writer Danielle Fuechtmann said of Gill's show.

"Most of the pieces were very wearable, and he obviously spends a lot of effort in construction and looking at the architectural aspects of clothing - it was beautiful."

Calgary's MaNoKin Design was also a crowd favourite, with its bevy of earth tones and fall-centric textures, including faux furs, tweeds and knits.

"I found MaNoKin to be fresh," fashion photographer Harvey Miedreich said. "It was a cohesive collection that was put together really, really well."

Unlike other fashion weeks that focus on designer collections alone, WCFW boasted a variety of local-based elements, like an emerging designer competition, hair and makeup shows and retail showcases of Whyte Avenue, West Edmonton Mall and 124th Street.

Local celebrities also hit the catwalk in looks styled by High Grade Clothing, with the Oilers' locker-room attendant Joey Moss fast becoming a crowd favourite.

"Joey stole the show," stylist and blogger Marie Zydek said. "He had so much energy sauntering down the runway."

Last year's Emerging Designer Competition winner, Patience Soyege, showed a collection of bold colours, floral prints and iridescent materials, while Nicole Campre won this year with an uberfeminine creation that boasted lace overlay and 1920s appeal.

"Nicole's dress was incredible," fashion blogger Kassandra Camponi said. "The level of detailing was so impressive, I would wear it in a heartbeat."

With a mixture of seasoned designers and up-and-comers showing throughout the week, Fuechtmann said her overall impression of WCFW was positive.

"There are a few designers that I think have a lot of potential to improve once they finesse their work and learn a bit more, but overall the shows have been fantastic," she said.

The next round of fashion fun is scheduled to hit the runway in September.
