GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- For folks looking for something to do with the kids the week of spring break, West Michigan offers plenty to choose from.
Many parents who are not traveling for the week are in search of things for their kids to do with all the extra time on their hands. For those who like physical activity, The Salvation Army Kroc Center, located at 2500 South Division, in Grand Rapids will certainly keep them busy.
The center is offering "Camp Kroc" and plenty of other activities this week such as bounce houses, basketball, swimming and crafts.
" 'Camp Kroc' is our summer day camp we offer all day long. Whenever the kids are out of school like, spring break, we offer our day camp as well," said Major Marc Johnson, senior Kroc officer for The Salvation Army. "We have 3 on 3 basketball tournaments planned. We have family drop in fitness. We have family drop in art classes. The theme is go green. We have those activities you can do as an individual but also as a family and as a group."
Johnson says this is a great week to spend time together and even if parents have to work they can bring the family after.
"The great thing here is we have day passes so you can come in just for a day and be a member and enjoy everything we have to offer," he said. It is $7 for adults and $5 for a youth pass. So for less than the price of a movie you can come and enjoy the whole day."
For young people who like to use their imaginations the Grand Rapids Public Museum has a temporary exhibit called "Facing Mars." It takes kids on a 2 year journey to travel to Mars and includes simulated activities that let visitors experience what it is like to defy gravity, perform surgery in space and man the microphone in Mission Control.
"It is asking you would you want to go to Mars and it explains what you would encounter on your trip. What will it do to your body. So at the end it asks you again would you like to go to Mars," said Gina Bivins, program manager for the Museum. "It is an educational opportunity. We try to sneak that in where ever we can. But learning can be fun so we want to show them that too. And I think what it does also is shows science can be fun and sometimes you learn without knowing that you are learning and i think that is always a good thing."
To go along with the exhibit, this week the Public Museum has stations set up on the first floor where children can do crafts and activities such as making Martian masks, and building aliens out of clay.
"We also have a Martian maze, some coloring pages and a hover craft that you can ride," Bivins said. "Even though we know there are not green Martians, it is helping children with their dexterity by cutting out masks and being creative is always a great way to use your brain."
On certain weekends the museum offers a special evening package that includes dinner, general admission, a planetarium show and entrance into the "Facing Mars" exhibit.
"We are also offering $5 membership discount during spring break. If you sign up for a membership that will give you a whole year of activities. Also, spring break week we are open until 9 every day through Saturday," said Bivins.
