• The Flyers spotted the Penguins a 3-0 lead before roaring back to earn a 4-3 overtime victory in an exciting playoffs opener. Philadelphia became the first NHL team since 1996 to start the playoffs with a win in which it overcame a three-goal deficit; 16 year ago, the Capitals won, 6-4, also at Pittsburgh, after they had trailed, 4-1, late in the second period (Jaromir Jagr, now with the Flyers, played for the Penguins in that game). The Flyers were the only NHL team that won three games in the recently concluded regular season by overcoming deficits of three-or-more goals.
Flyers rookie Brayden Schenn, in his NHL playoff debut, scored a goal and assisted on two others in Philadelphia's overtime victory in Pittsburgh. Schenn is only the second player in Flyers history to record three points in his first NHL playoff game; Rosie Paiement did that with a hat trick against St. Louis on April 13, 1968.
• Dustin Penner scored the key goal, breaking a 2-2 tie late in the third period as the Kings stole home-ice advantage from the Canucks with a 4-2 win at Vancouver in Game One of their first-round series. If nothing else, the Kings should be used to the drill: This marks the 12th consecutive playoff series that Los Angeles has opened on the road, dating back to the opening round in 1993 (the only year in which the Kings reached the Stanley Cup finals). Wednesday night's victory left the Kings with a 4-8 record in series openers over that span.
• Rookie Gabriel Bourque scored two goals to lead the Predators to a 3-2 win over the Red Wings in the opener of their first-round series. Bourque is only the third player in the last 14 playoff years to score two goals in his first NHL playoff game; the others were Nashville's Alexander Radulov in 2007 and Washington's Mike Green in 2008.
