MILWAUKEE — It was a game the Milwaukee Bucks had to win, but they just couldn't put away the depleted Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday night.
At least not until Monta Ellis decided to take over.
The Bucks' newly acquired guard hit all eight of his shots in the final 4 minutes, 32 seconds and scored his team's last 16 points, lifting Milwaukee to a 107-98 victory over the Cavaliers at the Bradley Center.
The victory moved the Bucks (26-28) within one game of the New York Knicks (27-27) for eighth place and the final playoff position in the Eastern Conference and within three games of Philadelphia (29-25) for seventh place.
"The shots just were going down," Ellis said. "When I feel like that, it feels amazing. My team and coach (Scott Skiles) had the confidence to keep going to me, and I was just making shots."
The Bucks actually made their final nine shots, including one by Brandon Jennings before Ellis went on his late-game tear.
Ellis started his streak with an 18-foot jumper and his second basket came on a finger-roll layup after a strong drive.
After that, Ellis got on a roll with his jumpers, hitting from 8 to 20 feet.
"Like Brandon was telling me, 'Just keep going until they stop you.' That's what I did.
"We knew coming into the game they were going to play hard all the way to the end. There are going to be games like that. We just had to find a way to win, and we did."
Ellis finished with 30 points, eight rebounds and five assists, the second time he has hit 30 or more points since joining the Bucks in the March 14 trade with Golden State.
Jennings added 19 points and Ersan Ilyasova had 18 for the Bucks, who swept the season series from Cleveland (4-0) for the first time since the 2002-'03 season.
"Monta was great," said Bucks guard Mike Dunleavy Jr. "That's what he does and that's what we brought him in for. He was big for us just to be able to seal it."
The Cavaliers (17-35) lost their ninth straight game. They played without rookie point guard Kyrie Irving, out with a sprained right shoulder he hurt against Milwaukee on Friday and re-injured Tuesday against San Antonio.
But Cleveland battled back from a 29-14 deficit after one quarter, winning the next two quarters and keeping the pressure on the Bucks until the end.
