Jimenez receives a five-game suspension - Boston.com
Apr 3rd 2012, 09:00

Cleveland Indians pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez was suspended for five games and fined by Major League Baseball Monday for intentionally throwing at Colorado's Troy Tulowitzki during a spring training game.

Jimenez will serve the suspension over the first five games of the season unless he asks the players' association to appeal the decision by MLB senior vice president Joe Garagiola Jr.

Indians manager Manny Acta said he expects the pitcher to appeal.

Before the penalty was announced, Jimenez said he wasn't going to apologize to Tulowitzki after hitting his former teammate on the left elbow Sunday.

Jimenez didn't think he should be suspended for drilling the star shortstop and said his primary concern is being ready for the season.

"Players are hit by pitches every day,'' Jimenez said. "With a guy like him, you have to go inside. I can't get the ball to go where I want every time.''

Earlier this spring, Jimenez revealed he was unhappy in Colorado before being traded to Cleveland last July. Tulowitzki later was quoted as saying the former All-Star should get over it.

Matt Cain and the Giants agreed to a $127.5 million, six-year contract, the largest deal for a righthanded pitcher in baseball history. The agreement adds $112.5 million over five years to the $15 million salary for 2012 that was remaining in his previous deal. Cain gets a $5 million signing bonus as part of the new contract and $20 million annually from 2013-17. The deal includes a $21 million option for 2018 with a $7.5 million buyout that, if exercised, would raise the total to $141 million over seven seasons . . . Yankees lefthander Andy Pettitte moved closer to pitching in a game after another positive throwing session. Pettitte made 25 pitches off a bullpen mound in Tampa, two days after his second simulated game . . . Tim Hudson made his first appearance of the spring, allowing an infield single over two innings for the Braves in an 8-2 loss to the Mets in Kissimmee, Fla. Hudson had back surgery during the offseason and isn't expected back until May . . . Mets closer Frank Francisco had an MRI on his left knee, a day after having fluid drained. He said the knee felt sore earlier in camp but it went away until Saturday, when he pitched two innings against the Marlins.

The Reds are discussing a new contract with first baseman Joey Votto that would extend beyond the 2013 season. The Reds tried to sign him to a long-term deal after he led them to the NL Central title and won the NL MVP award in 2010. Instead, they settled for a three-year, $38 million deal that avoided salary arbitration and kept Votto under contract through 2013 . . . Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton is suffering from migraine headaches and is day to day . . . Braves relief pitcher Cristhian Martinez was arrested early Monday and charged with drunken driving after police say they saw him weaving in and out of a lane while driving slowly on a major Atlanta highway.
