Papier-máché Easter eggs

Make giant eggs to help decorate your house for next weekend. It's a fun (though a bit messy) craft you can do with your kids, brought to you by creative local mom April Hill.
You'll need

• Newspaper torn into strips, plus large sheets of newspaper to work on
• Balloons blown up into egg shapes (they don't have to be perfect and you can mold them later)
• White glue, wallpaper paste or a paste made from a mix of 1 cup all purpose flour and 1½ cups of water
• Paints, glitter, jewels and other embellishments for decorating
Do this

1 - Blow up balloon to the size you want, and tie.
2 - One at a time, dip newspaper strips in paste and skim off excess with your fingers. Place strip on balloon and repeat until it's covered (except for an opening on end to remove the balloon later).
3 - Allow to dry for 24 hours, then apply another layer. You can add more layers to make egg as thick as you like, letting each layer dry. (You can shape your project to look more egg-like while it's drying.) Flatten the bottom so the egg will stand on its own.
4 - Once your final layer is completely dry, pop the balloon and take it out through the opening. (If you decide to fill your egg like a pinata, do that now.) Apply a few more strips of papier-mache to close the hole. Let dry.
5 - Paint and decorate your egg as you like. If you want to keep beyond one season, spray your handiwork with a coat of clear sealer.
6 - Display your egg, or eggs, with other Easter items. Tuck colorful tissue paper around the grouping, or fill an old basket with Easter grass and add the egg.
