Part of the appeal of "Game of Thrones" is its complexity -- both in character and plot. Here's a look at some of the sprawling series' central players as they head into Season 2:

Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage): The wine-guzzling, prostitute-loving, snarky dwarf Tyrion has been sent by his rich and powerful father to King's Landing. At the capital, Tyrion has temporarily assumed his father's position as Hand of the King, the top adviser to the ruler on the Iron Throne -- who now happens to be his sadistic teen nephew Joffrey, who he's grown to despiseDinklage, who won Emmy and Golden Globe awards last year for his masterful portrayal of the character, will see even more scheming screen time this season as King's Landing faces multiple enemies.

Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey): Now the Queen Regent following the coronation of her son Joffrey, Cersei isn't at all thrilled Tyrion has crashed her court -- or that her lover and twin brother Jaime Lannister is being held captive by Robb Stark. Cersei continues to manipulate all the kingdom's pawns to keep House Lannister on the Iron Throne. Despite her steel will, the wicked lioness' concerns continue to mount.

Joffrey Lannister (Jack Gleeson): Unaware that he's the product of an incestuous relationship, Joffrey feels entitled to rule from the Iron Throne and loves the power of being king. Following his shocking order last season to behead Ned Stark, the teen king is now on an uncontrollable sadistic streak. Played to sociopathic perfection by Gleeson, Joffrey is one of those characters viewers love to despise.

Robb Stark (Richard Madden): Following Ned Stark's beheading, Ned's oldest son Robb, the heir to Winterfell, wants revenge and has waged an all-out war on the Lannisters. He's now being called King of the North by his father's loyal men and is on a hot streak in the battlefield. He's even taken captive the mighty knight, longtime Stark foe Jaime Lannister. Robb faces enemies on multiple fronts, including others who feel they are the rightful heir to the Iron Throne.

Arya Stark (Maisie Williams): After witnessing the execution of her father, Ned Stark's youngest daughter flees King's Landing with Yoren, a recruiter for the Night's Watch who promises to take her back to Winterfell. Now in a short-haired disguise as a boy, Arya and the ragtag bunch are facing a perilous journey north and quickly find themselves under attack by the king's men.

Brandon Stark (Isaac Hempstead-Wright): Paralyzed from the waist down after being pushed out a window, Robb's younger brother is quietly going about his duties at Winterfell. Experiencing fantastical dreams and other visions, he soon learns that he might have the ability to skinchange, that is, enter the mind of an animal and control its actions.

Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) : The last confirmed member of the ancient Targaryen dynasty, Daenerys finds herself and her followers on death's door in the endless desert region known as the Red Waste. During last year's season finale, her mysterious eggs hatched into three living, fire-breathing dragons. But her desire to raise an army and use her dragons to win back the Iron Throne is secondary to her battle for survival. She is one of the most popular "Thrones" characters, but in the first four episodes of the second season we don't see much of her crew as they travel through the desert.
