The festivities: Tigers Hall of Famer Al Kaline will throw out the first pitch today. The Tigers also will raise their Central Division champions banner and "American Idol" finalist Haley Reinhart will perform the national anthem. There will be a flyover by the 107th Fighter Squadron "Red Devils" flying the A-10C Warthog from Selfridge Air National Guard Base.
Bobby V: New Red sox manager Bobby Valentine is 2,189-1,117 in the majors over 15 seasons. This will be his first game managing in the majors since Sept. 29, 2002 when his Mets beat the Braves, 6-1.
They meet again: The last Valentine managed against Jim Leyland, it was Sept. 19, 1999 when Bobby V was with the Mets and Leyland was in his only year with the Rockies. The Mets won, 10-5, at Coors Field as Benny Agbayani drove in three runs. Orel Hershisher, who will be doing the game for ESPN, started for the Mets and went six innings. Jerry DiPoto, now the GM of the Angels, pitched in relief for the Rockies.
Opening against the best: Verlander is the first reigning MVP to face the Red Sox on Opening Day since Walter Johnson of the Senators in 1913. The Big Train, who had won the now defunct Chalmers Award, won the game, 3-0. Verlander also won the Cy Young Award. The last Cy Young winner to face the Sox on Opening Day was Baltimore's Jim Palmer in 1976. He beat Ferguson Jenkins, 1-0. The Orioles scored their run thanks to two errors, the second on a throw by Fred Lynn from center field.
Opening numbers: The Sox are 54-56-1 in the first game of the season. They have won three of their last four openers but fell 9-5 at Texas last season. … The Sox are opening against the Tigers for the first time since 1994, a 9-8 victory at Fenway Park.
The big lefty: Jon Lester will be the first lefthander to start consecutive Opening Days since Mel Parnell (1952-54). Parnell passed away March 20. … Lester will be pitching at Comerica Park for only the second time in his six-year career. He allowed four runs in seven innings on May 15, 2010 and was not involved in the decision. The Sox lost the game, 7-6. … Lester is 0-2 in three career starts against the Tigers. They are the only AL team he has never beaten.
Tiger tales: The Sox were 5-1 against Detroit last season. ... The Sox are 19-7 against Detroit the last four years, 10-4 at Comerica Park. The Sox are 247-159 against Detroit since 1954.
Welcome aboard: Cody Ross, Ryan Sweeney, Nick Punto, Mark Melancon, Justin Thomas and Vicente Padilla are new members of the Red Sox. So are coaches Jerry Royster, Bob McClure, Alex Ochoa and Randy Niemann.
Expensive injuries: The Red Sox have nine players on the disabled list to start the season (Andrew Bailey, Chris Carpenter, Carl Crawford, Rich Hill, Bobby Jenks, Ryan Kalish, John Lackey, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Andrew Miller) who are making a combined $57,246,000. That's more than the entire payroll of the Athletics ($55,372,500) and Padres ($55,244,700).
Media matters: Don Orsillo starts his 12th season with NESN and Jerry Remy his 25th. They'll be joined by rookie Jenny Dell. Joe Castiglione is in his 30th season on the radio with Dave O'Brien starting his sixth.
Things to watch for: Ellsbury, Gonzalez and Youkilis did not homer in spring training. ... Lester was rocked in the opener against Texas last season and has a career 4.12 ERA in the first month of the season. ... Ross has six homers and 16 RBIs in spring training and played excellent defense in the outfield.
