They meet again: The last Valentine managed against Jim Leyland, it was Sept. 19, 1999 when Bobby V was with the Mets and Leyland was in his only year with the Rockies. The Mets won, 10-5, at Coors Field as Benny Agbayani drove in three runs. Orel Hershisher, who will be doing the game for ESPN, started for the Mets and went six innings. Jerry DiPoto, now the GM of the Angels, pitched in relief for the Rockies.

Opening against the best: Verlander is the first reigning MVP to face the Red Sox on Opening Day since Walter Johnson of the Senators in 1913. That's more than the entire payroll of the Athletics ($55,372,500) and Padres ($55,244,700).

Media matters: Don Orsillo starts his 12th season with NESN and Jerry Remy his 25th. They'll be joined by rookie Jenny Dell. Joe Castiglione is in his 30th season on the radio with Dave O'Brien starting his sixth.

OK, that seems like enough to get you ready for the game. Check back later for notes from the clubhouse.
