'Fun at the River's Bend' - Daily Freeman Journal Apr 11th 2012, 04:22 When RAGBRAI cruises into Webster City for an overnight stay on July 24, the bike riders will be greeted by the theme "Fun at the River's Bend." The theme and logo were revealed Tuesday night at a special launch party held at Fuller Hall Recreation Center, hosted by members of the publicity, hospitality and social media committee. Mayor Janet Adams introduced Milissa Bailey who helped create the logo and theme. Bailey explained that the committee had discussed various aspects of life in Webster City to determine what message should be conveyed. "Not everybody knows this, but Webster City was built on a bend in the Boone River. And after all, we are in Boone River Country," she said, alluding to the city's official motto. "That lead us to 'Fun at the River's Bend,'" said Bailey. "And that's what we hope all of the riders will find here." The colorful green, blue, orange and white logos will be featured on the official Webster City RAGBRAI T-shirts, which were also revealed during the event. As the logo was introduced to the audience, committee members unzipped jackets to model the shirts. Trish Bahrenfuss, T-shirt chairman, had about 30 of the available for sale Tuesday night, but said a total of 800 were ordered. "Of course, if we sell out of the 800, we can order more," she said. By the end of the event, all of the t-shirts on hand were sold and dozens of people had placed orders for more. Bahrenfuss said those interested in ordering shirts could email her at trshnkvn@q.com or call 832-1214. The shirts are $12 each through May 1. After that date, the cost goes up to $15, Bahrenfuss said. Childrens shirts will remain at $12. Those who purchase shirts will be admitted at no charge to the concert and beverage garden, according to Adams. The shirts and neon-colored bicycle pins are being sold to help offset the costs of publicity, hospitality activities and the information centers, according to Adams. Adams also introduced her fellow executive committee members - Carrie Fitzgerald, Chamber of Commerce director; Kent Harfst, director of recreation and public grounds and Brian Hughes, Webster City police chief. Each outlined committee responsibilities, and echoed the need for more volunteers. Committee officials estimate that approximately 800 volunteers will be needed to organize and carryout the plans. Volunteer registration forms were passed around and many of those present filled out the sheets before leaving. Publicity committee members said the city's RAGBRAI website, www.webstercityragbrai.com would be live as of Thursday. An online volunteer registration form will be available at that website, as well as at www.freemanjournal.net. Committee members also encouraged people to "like" the Webster City RAGBRAI Facebook page and to follow webstercityragbrai on Twitter for local updates. Webster City will be the third overnight stop on the weeklong annual bike ride. Bike riders will also travel through several local communities, including Lehigh, Stratford, Kamrar, Jewell and Story City.
