If you're not visiting Florida to golf, grow older or visit a theme park, you may be looking to land a lunker. Gearing up is the easy part — tackle is available everywhere. But the experts have a few easily overlooked warnings that are an essential part of any tackle box, freshwater or saltwater:
• Never forget sunscreen. The Florida sun can be singeing any time of year, and if you're stuck out in the middle of Okeechobee with the growing sting of painfully cooked skin, it could make your day rather uncomfortable at best, and affect the rest of your vacation with a painful case of sun poisoning at worst.
• Bring along plenty of water. Becoming dehydrated is flat-out dangerous, and it can happen quickly.
• Don't feed the wildlife. Some of the animals that live in and around Florida's waterways are the kind of denizens you might want to steer clear of. Alligators can quickly lose their fear of humans if they're fed regularly, which is not good for everyone involved.
• Keep younger kids away from heavily overgrown shorelines. Alligators tend to frequent those environments, and if it's a particularly brazen gator, it could present a dangerous situation.
• If you're fishing a bed during the spawn, observe catch-and-release, or catch one and leave the others to protect the eggs. This assures a healthy future fishery.
