Nintendo marks Pokémon's 25th anniversary with two nostalgic new games
Pokémon Legends Arceus and Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl announced on the eve of the Nintendo series’ 25th anniversary
Tomorrow marks 25 years since the first Pokémon titles debuted on Nintendo’s Game Boy in Japan – and developer Game Freak has announced two new games to mark the occasion, both inspired by 2006’s Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.
The first releases are Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, remakes of the Nintendo DS originals for Nintendo Switch, out later this year. Pokémon Legends Arceus, an adventure set in the region of Sinnoh’s past, and resembling a blend of Pokémon Stadium and Breath of the Wild, will be released in 2022, also on Nintendo Switch. It is a significant diversion from the usual turn-based fights and tightly controlled exploration of a Pokémon game, with free movement and wild creatures roaming an open world. Continue reading...

Superman Reboot Movie Is Coming From JJ Abrams And Ta-Nehisi Coates
JJ Abrams is producing a Superman reboot movie for DC. It's been reported by Deadline that Ta-Nehisi Coates will write the film, with Abrams developing it as part of his Bad Robot production company.
There are no plot or casting details available currently, and it's unknown if Henry Cavill will return to the role as Superman. However, Deadline states that Cavill is "eager" to reprise the role he first played in Zack Snyder's 2013 film Man of Steel.
Coates is an exciting choice of writer for the movie. He's known as a journalist and non-fiction writer as well as for his comic books. His work in comics include a number of Black Panther and Captain America series for Marvel, as well as working as a consultant on the Eisner Award-winning World of Wakanda. Sifu, An Exciting New Martial-Arts Game, Premieres During State Of Play
Click here to watch embedded media
Sifu premiered today during Sony’s State of Play showcase. Developed by indie dev studio Sloclap (the creators of 2017's Absolver), Sifu is an intense third-person action game where players take on waves of enemies in various environments — from housing complexes to death arenas — using an array of martial-arts techniques. Players can use the environment to their advantage by pinning enemies to walls for devastating attacks. Some of the adversaries in your path will attempt to strike you down with deadly weapons like pipes and knives, but the fighting mechanics allow for interesting counterattacks and opportunities for players to use unique weapons of their own.
Visually, Sifu looks like it’s inspired by fan-favorite kung-fu movies, but based on the trailer's grim tone, the gritty realism of the combat moves, and the main character's serious disposition, the game appears to have a more grounded, personal narrative. Sifu follows the journey of a young martial artist who vows to take revenge on the mysterious group of assassins that murdered his family. Players are tasked with hunting down each assassin one by one across the different districts of a fictional Chinese city. Neon lights fall forebodingly against dark corridors where gangs of nefarious enemies lie in wait. If players die during their travels, a mysterious pendant will ultimately bring them back to life. But according to Sifu’s press release, death defiance comes at a cost: “you will age significantly every time you come back to life: time is the price you will pay for your revenge.”
More details about what players are bound to experience in the gameplay (at least, on a more mechanical level) as well as the greater narrative will likely be revealed in the coming months. Sifu is slated to release this year for the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC (via the Epic Store).

Star Wars: Republic Commando Coming To PS4 And Switch
Fresh off its announcement of its revival of the cult-favorite Xbox game Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse, publisher Aspyr Media is back with another modernization of a classic Xbox title. The LucasArts fan-favorite tactical FPS, Star Wars: Republic Commando, is coming to PlayStation 4 and Switch this April.
Star Wars: Republic Commando takes place during the events of the Clone Wars. If you're familiar with the history of the famous galaxy "far, far away," then you know the Clone Wars is the conflict depicted in Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, and the Clone Wars film and television show.
Republic Commando has you control an elite squad consisting of four clone troopers who were genetically engineered to be better than your average, run-of-the-mill clones. The campaign takes players across the major fronts of the Clone Wars, including the desert planet of Geonosis and the forested Wookiee home of Kashyyyk.
This PlayStation 4 and Switch version only has the single-player campaign experience, but features modernized controls. Check out the announcement trailer for a blast from the past. Check

Star Wars: Republic Commando comes to PlayStation 4 and Switch on April 6, and will cost $14.99. If you're on Xbox, don't sweat it, because the original Xbox version is already backward compatible on both Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One, and only costs $9.99.

Xbox Games With Gold March 2021 Free Games Revealed
The Xbox Games With Gold February 2021 lineup is still available for those interested in the freebies available this month. Still, for those looking forward to what's next, Microsoft has revealed what the Xbox Games With Gold March 2021 lineup looks like. Just like every month, March will offer a select few free titles for Xbox Live and Game Pass Ultimate members to enjoy. Whether you want to become a pirate or fight in the llama apocalypse, here are the free games on the way next month for Games With Gold.
Xbox Games With Gold March 2021 free games
The latest lineup doesn't pack quite the punch that the current month has, but it does have a llama apocalypse (so that's cool). While I haven't checked out Vicious Attack Llama Apocalypse myself, the fact that it's free gives me an excuse to try out such a wild concept, which honestly sounds weird enough to be awesome. Port Royale is a solid try for those that like a good ol' fashioned pirate adventure.
Click here to watch embedded media
For the full list of available titles next month:
* Warface: Breakout ($19.99 ERP): Available March 1 to 31
* Vicious Attack Llama Apocalypse ($14.99 ERP): Available March 16 to April 15
* Metal Slug 3 ($9.99 ERP): Available March 1 to 15
* Port Royale 3 ($19.99 ERP): Available March 16 to 31
Just like with the PS Plus free games, an active Xbox Live membership is required to claim the latest free games. The best part regarding these programs? These games are free, so if you don't like them, simply uninstall and nothing in your world changes dramatically other than a few lost moments. Simplicity is nice sometimes.
Just like with the PlayStation Plus lineup, to get the free titles seen above an Xbox Live membership is required. So long as that membership remains active, the games are yours to keep. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members also will have access to these free games since the Live membership is included in that package.

Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection Review
Capcom's Ghost 'n Goblins franchise has a very specific reputation. Whether you played the Arcade or NES version of Ghosts 'n Goblins, Ghouls 'n Ghosts on the Genesis, or Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts on the SNES, working through these games felt like pushing a boulder up a mountain or pulling teeth. A little over 35 years later, Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection remixes and revives those games into a platformer that looks new but, perhaps unsurprisingly, embodies that same boulder-pushing, teeth-pulling gameplay. Its modern flourishes soften the blow a bit from time to time, but Resurrection is still defined by punishing, borderline cruel tactics that game designers have long-since outgrown.
Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection is a new game, but it functionally retells the Ghosts 'n Goblins story. The basic mechanical structure of the series remains intact, too: You run and jump from left to right, throwing javelins, knives, flaming potions, and other weapons at a seemingly endless onslaught of zombies, scythe-wielding skeletons, and winged demons. Famously, you begin the level clad in armor but lose some of it every time you take a hit until you're inevitably hopping around in heart-adorned boxers.
Resurrection derives large chunks--level themes, sequences, and bosses--from previous games, most notably Ghouls 'n Ghosts. Some of the series' distinctive bosses and sequences are reimagined in Resurrection's pencil-style art, which smartly breathes a lot more color and whimsy into a series that's always felt more cheeky than spooky. Not every reference to the old games is pulled literally from an older game; some, like the now-towering gray cyclops from Ghosts 'n Goblins, are more liberal reinterpretations. Even the enemies and sequences you can trace back to a specific point in a previous game are not identical to their predecessors, and it doesn't feel like replaying a portion of another game, but it's a potent dose of nostalgia.Continue Reading at GameSpot

Meet The Self-Trained Composer Funky-fying Final Fantasy Music
You may have seen his videos floating around social media, relatively short snippets of him jamming out to groovy remixes of songs like Final Fantasy VII's "One-Winged Angel" by Nobuo Uematsu. What Alex Moukala is attempting to do, he explains on Twitter, is normalize video game music to make the sounds he grew up with and was inspired by more accessible to the masses. His process: take a popular video game track, split it in half, send a funky bassline and catchy kick drum pattern through the whole thing, and crank the volume all the way up.
One-Winged Angel is Funky (Full Version)#FinalFantasyVIIRemake pic.twitter.com/7yEO7sai2a — Alex Moukala (@alex_moukala) February 2, 2021
In order to start the conversation of normalizing video game music, Alex started a YouTube channel a couple of years ago to upload the full remixes of his funky-fied tracks. He also uses his skillset as a self-trained composer and producer to analyze his favorite video game songs, which includes tracks like Devil May Cry 5's "Bury The Light" and Persona 5's "Last Surprise."
But what does bringing video game music into the mainstream actually look like? Popular music award ceremonies such as the Grammys don't include video game soundtracks for consideration and the revived MTV Video Music Awards killed the Best Video Game Soundtrack category in 2006, just two years after the celebration was originally established. The only other place where video game music is admired is in circles specific to video games, including shows such as the Game Developers Choice Awards and The Game Awards.Continue Reading at GameSpot

Doom Eternal Director Opens Up About A Possible Female Slayer
We see a lot of "gender bends" of our favorite characters and the Slayer from the Doom franchise is no exception. With the help of skins, we've even made the killer of demons a unicorn, a return to his classic form, and even a purple...uh, pony. With the weird variety of different looks for our badass protagonist, having a female-facing Slayer wouldn't be much of a stretch. According to the director of Doom Eternal, Hugo Martin, that creative direction has crossed the team's minds. So why haven't we seen it yet? The answer is more thoughtful than you might think.
The revelation of a possible female Slayer came by way of a recent stream where Martin talked a little bit about the different directions they've considered taking Doomguy and what a Slayer is like in this universe. To him, if this were to happen they would want it to be more than a skin, instead choosing to bring in a female Slayer into the storyline. According to the director, "I've thought about it, actually. I think if we did it, I'd want it to be lethal. I think it's interesting how it would impact the glory kills, the kind of weapons that she would have, the fighting style—certainly all aggression, absolutely, but a different type of aggression. I would really strive to allow it to impact the gameplay in a way that was meaningful. I've definitely put a lot of thought into that."
He added, "When it comes to designing the action, you think about, like, if the Slayer is a Ferrari, then what would a female Slayer be? What would a medieval Slayer be? How would that affect things? What sort of analogies could you draw from that, allow that to influence the experience? So I don't know. It definitely would be cool."
Click here to watch embedded media
I've been playing the Doom games since 1993 and I remember as a younger girl, I thought it would be pretty heckin' cool to see myself all donned up in full gear taking out the hordes of Hell. Personally, I'd love to see this happen, but I do agree with Martin that if it does, I would want it to be for a reason, to have a positive impact on the game. I wouldn't want a skin and I wouldn't want any character thrown in just for the sake of throwing them in there, regardless of gender. But it sounds like the team is being incredibly thorough about how this could work, which already shows that if it does happen, it will be done in a way that enhances a beloved franchise in a way that makes sense.
While it doesn't sound like a female Slayer is happening any time soon, the prospect does make me excited to brainstorm what else I, as a fan, would like to see added to the game. What about you? If you could bring in your own dream Slayer, what would they be like? What sort of moves would they have, what would they look like? Sound off with your ideal pitch in the comment section below!

Netflix's The Irregulars Will Investigate The Supernatural With Sherlock Holmes
Netflix has announced The Irregulars, a new series "that follows a gang of troubled street teens who are manipulated into solving crimes" for Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes. The eight-part drama is slated to hit the streaming service on March 26. Check out the first official teaser for the series below.
The verb "manipulated" in that synopsis above is intriguing, as it suggests some reimagining of both the characters of Holmes and Watson (or at least just Watson). However, it's hard to glean any insight into what's going on with Watson and his perhaps devious intentions. What instead is clear is these "misfit" kids collaborate with the famous detective duo on investigating "crimes [that] take on a horrifying supernatural edge." The Irregulars is based on the Baker Street Irregulars gang from the original books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.Continue Reading at GameSpot

How a game about making zines helped me recapture my creativity in lockdown
A tongue-in-cheek game called Electric Zine Maker saved me from pandemic burnout – and gave me a new community
When I sit down to play games, I am always more drawn to peaceful, low-pressure environments than high-pace adventure. I like those where I get to make a difference but not necessarily through violence. I spend time on my lush island in Animal Crossing and am rewarded for the aesthetically appealing organisation of my furniture. In the stylised windows of Super Mario Maker, I own the very tools that composed some of the defining games of all time and can do whatever I want with them. The play is in the making.
Creation games aren’t new; they go way back to the original SimCity and beyond. But in autumn 2019, during a period of intense, life-altering burnout, I came across Nathalie Lawhead’s Electric Zine Maker and it redefined what I thought I knew about play, creation and the art that can emerge from video game interfaces. Zine Maker is a clever, accessible tool in the disguise of a joyful toy. I had become sick from overwork and had resigned myself to transitioning careers, leaving writing fiction entirely to move into a more practical realm. I was convinced that the connection between the part of my brain that makes art and the part that produces joy was fried forever. But this game sparked it again. Continue reading...

Rainbow Six Siege Year 6 Includes Reputation System, Map Reworks
Just a few days after unveiling the latest Rainbow Six Siege operator, Flores, Ubisoft has unveiled a Year 6 roadmap that details how everything from maps to customization is being adjusted. Good behavior is also a central pillar of Year 6, and there will be a new tool to help with this.
As revealed previously, Rainbow Six Siege's first season in Year 6 will be Crimson Heist, and in addition to Flores joining the battle, it also includes a reworked version of the Border map. If you're on a PC test server, you can start playing it tomorrow, February 22. Seasons 2 will include a Nakoda Nations operator and a rework of Favela, while Season 3 will include three reworks for maps and will feature Croatian operators. A fourth operator will be from Ireland, and the Outback map will be getting a rework.
It's more than just content updates coming this year, though. Several gameplay elements are being reworked, including being able to control cameras and gadgets after you've died, as well as letting attackers change out operators as many times as they need to during the match's preparation phase. Armor will be switched to health, as well, and there will be a new one-bullet weapon called the Gonne-6 that can destroy bulletproof gadgets. It's only available to a few operators, including Glaz, Dokkaebi, Lion, Finka, Amaru, Gridlock, Iana, and Zero. Continue Reading at GameSpot

DualSense Teardown Shows Drifting Issues Should Have Been Expected
Sony may have a long road ahead of it in order to stop issues with the innovative DualSense controller. With a class-action lawsuit recently filed against Sony over issues with DualSense controllers' drifting analog sticks, the company could be looking at ways it can improve the design. Unfortunately, the problem doesn't look like it has an easy fix.
In a new video from iFixit, the site looks into the reasons why the problem is becoming more prevalent, and it found the DualSense is using "off the shelf" joystick modules that have been prone to drifting in the past. The same module is used by a lot of other controllers, too, including the Nintendo Switch Pro controller and the Xbox Elite controller, the latter of which has seen drifting issues of its own.
The joysticks aren't easy to remove for quick replacement, either. On the DualSense, haptic motor wires are soldered to the board, and these must be removed before you can do anything else. Once that's done, 14 different solder points must be melted to get off the joystick module at all. Aside from the wiring for the haptics, none of the issues seem to be tied to the new triggers, which utilize their own motors to add variable resistance. Continue Reading at GameSpot

Soulja Boy Gaming Console Part 2 After First Attempt Massively Failed
Instagram
After his first attempt at breaking into the gaming industry as a console manufacturer was ripped apart, it looks like rapper Soulja Boy is ready to crank out try number two. The first try at making his own console began in 2019 when he tried to peddle a "new design." Immediately, he was met with cease and desist notifications from major companies in the business while the rapper took potshots at former Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Aime when he said he "made him retire." After numerous jokes and utter silence, it looks like Soulja Boy is crank the gaming market once more.
While the expensive knock-off line he first tried to create fell to the wayside following numerous threats of legal action (with one in particular looking almost exactly like the PlayStation Vita), it looks like round two is getting ready to deploy for the public to see. According to a Twitter account simply called Soulja Game Console (similar in name to the original products he was offering), the rapper is "building a new console from scratch, all-new design. All-new games. All-new deals. Let's make history."
Building a new console from scratch, all new design. All new games. All new deals. Let’s make history. — Soulja Game Console (@SouljaGame) February 13, 2021
The Twitter account, which both follows and is followed by Soulja Boy himself for authenticity, doesn't share any pictures of the new system, but the associated Instagram did and ... well, it looks like round two won't be much different than round one if that PlayStation 2 controller is anything to go by: View this post on Instagram
A post shared by SouljaGame Console (@souljagameconsole)
It was clear that Soulja Boy was never planning on leaving the monetary opportunities that the gaming industry has to offer given his tweets, his streaming presence, and his launched esports organization, but jumping back into the console-making business is certainly a choice. He even asked Tony Hawk if the pro skater would like to help make a new video game. Given his responses to critique and other companies showing direct comparisons to already available products, this launch seems likely to face issues similar to his attempt.
In all fairness: Go after your goals. If that's what you want to do, don't let those ambitions wither into dust. That being said, let's make sure that the "made from scratch" console isn't made from other consoles already out on the market.
It will be interesting to see what "big plans" the rapper has next. For now, we have a Twitter account, a brand new Instagram account, and a dream.

Zack Snyder Releases Sample Of Junkie XL's Justice League Score
Zack Snyder's Justice League is just a month away, and the director is working hard to hype the picture up before its debut on HBO Max. If you haven't been paying attention, it would be easy to dismiss it as a director's cut, but the project has involved extensive reshoots, re-done visual effects, and a totally new score that replaces Danny Elfman's score with the one originally created by Thomas Holkenborg, better known as Junkie XL. Snyder dropped the first track from the score on social media today to give us a hint of what we can expect.
Take a listen. https://t.co/aUO7BU4kEz @Junkie_XL #ZackSnydersJusticeLeague #SnyderCut — Zack Snyder (@ZackSnyder) February 17, 2021
Snyder had previously revealed a short clip of the track, titled The Crew at Warpower. This is the full song, though, clocking in at 6:49. It definitely has some of Junkie XL's trademark sound, with the percussion calling to mind some of the best tracks from his work on Mad Max: Fury Road. Aside from Justice League and Fury Road, Junkie XL has also worked on films like Alita: Battle Angel, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Deadpool.
Before Snyder stepped away from the original Justice League, he had Junkie XL scoring the film. When Snyder left, though, Warner Bros. made a bunch of decisions that seemed aimed at making the project a bit safer. The studio called in Joss Whedon, still fairly fresh off the success of Marvel's Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron, presumably with the hope that he'd bring success to yet another superhero team. They also replaced composer Junkie XL with Danny Elfman.Continue Reading at GameSpot
