John Danks grew up going to games at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, Texas, and imagined pitching there on opening day when Texas drafted him in the first round.

The left-hander with a new $65 million, five-year contract did get his first opening day start there, for the Chicago White Sox on Friday in Robin Ventura's managerial debut, a 3-2 loss to the two-time defending American League champion Rangers.

"This was a fun game, it really was," said Danks, who struck out six with no walks in six innings. "All in all, it was disappointing to get beat, but I feel like I'm where I need to be. That's a good lineup over there. ... If I can be this good or better, it should be a good year."

The Rangers used a familiar and successful script to win their opener just more than five months after twice coming within one strike of a World Series championship before losing in seven games to St. Louis. It was a picture-perfect day -- 75 degrees under blue skies.

Ian Kinsler had a leadoff double in the first for Texas before a sacrifice bunt by Elvis Andrus moved him to third and a sac fly by Josh Hamilton brought him home. Then Kinsler's homer in the third made it 2-0.

After Chicago tied the game by scoring twice in the sixth, including Adam Dunn's record-tying eighth opening day homer, Hamilton led off the bottom of the frame with a single and scored on a single by Michael Young.

Angels 5, Royals 0 -- At Anaheim, Calif.: Jered Weaver struck out 10 in eight dominant innings of four-hit ball, Peter Bourjos' bases-loaded infield single broke open a scoreless game in the eighth inning, and Los Angeles won Albert Pujols' hitless debut.

Orioles 4, Twins 2 -- At Baltimore: Jake Arrieta pitched seven scoreless innings, Nick Markakis homered and drove in three runs, and Baltimore beat Minnesota to mark the 20th anniversary of the opening of Camden Yards.

Rays 7, Yankees 6 -- At St. Petersburg, Fla.: Carlos Pena hit a grand slam off CC Sabathia in the first then completed a ninth-inning comeback with an RBI single off Mariano Rivera that lifted Tampa Bay over New York.

Mariners 7, Athletics 3 -- At Oakland, Calif.: Chone Figgins had three hits and two RBIs, and Kyle Seager singled twice and drove in a pair of runs, leading Seattle past Oakland.

National League

Diamondbacks 5, Giants 4 -- At Phoenix: Chris Young and Paul Goldschmidt hit first-inning home runs off Tim Lincecum and Arizona opened defense of its NL West title with a victory over San Francisco.

Rockies 5, Astros 3 -- At Houston: Pinch-runner Eric Young scored the go-ahead run on an error in the eighth inning and Troy Tulowitzki homered in the ninth to lift Colorado.

Dodgers 6, Padres 0 -- At San Diego: Chad Billingsley came within two outs of a complete game, striking out 11 and allowing only three hits in Los Angeles' victory over San Diego.
