WEST PALM BEACH

I went on a Communist hunt last week.

"Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?" I asked U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch, D-Fla.

I had good reason to grill Deutch about his secret Communist affiliation, because my very own Congressman Allen West, R-Fla., told a Jensen Beach crowd Tuesday night that he "believes" there are "78 to 81" Democratic members of the U.S. House of Representatives who are members of the Communist Party.

That's about 42 percent of all the Democrats in the House. So statistically, Deutch could easily be one of them.

"I will only respond to that if I am put under oath and brought before Congressman West's House Committee on Un-American Activities," Deutch said. "We've been waiting for decades to see who will pick up the mantle of McCarthyism, now we know."

I would have to report this conversation to West, which would only exacerbate his severe case of PTSD -- Paranoid Talk-Show Disorder.

Look out, comrade Deutch. You could find yourself ending up in the league of that she-badger Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who has already been singled out for deportation by West.

"It makes you wonder how many Democrats there really are in Congress," Deutch said. "Because it wasn't that long ago when West was comparing us to the Nazis. And now we're Communists."

"Yes," I said, "and when you subtract all the Democratic congressmen who are sleeper-cell Muslim Brotherhood members, there's probably nobody left."

I advised Deutch that if he didn't want to get swept up in West's commie hunt, he should avoid wearing red ties to work.

"I would note that red ties have been associated more with Republican members," Deutch said. "And when Republicans swept the House in the 2010 election it was called 'The Red Tide.'" Deutch was obviously adept at using Saul Alinsky tactics. I would have to report this to West, too ...

West disclosed his Communist Party accusations while answering a question at a town-hall forum gathering.

"What percentage of American legislators are card-carrying Marxists?" the questioner asked.

Some in the crowd scoffed at the question, but West honored it with a serious face and a matter-of-fact answer.

"That's a good question" he said, and then he accused as many as 81 of his House colleagues of being secret Communist Party members masquerading as Democrats.

"It's called the Congressional Progressive Caucus," he said. West is a bit of an authority when it comes to masquerading. He still wears his Army medals on his civilian clothes nine years after being drummed out of the service.

"The Communist Party has publicly referred to the Progressive Caucus as its allies," West's communications director Angela Melvin explained via email on Wednesday. "The Progressive Caucus speaks for itself. These individuals certainly aren't proponents of free markets or individual economic freedom."

So basically, if you're a liberal Democrat you're a member of the Communist Party? Not according to the Communist Party.

"We agree with the Progressive Caucus more than some other groups in Congress, but we also have a lot of differences with them," said Libero Della Piana, vice chairman of the Communist Party USA. "We have areas of agreement with the Republican Party, too. We support public education and public parks and Republicans do too. But that doesn't make Republicans Communists."

Della Piana said that while his group would like to have members of Congress in the Communist Party, there are none.

"What West said just takes guilt by association to an absurd level," Della Piana said.

Email: frank_cerabino@pbpost.com.
