SakuraTasteSmall.jpgThe plum and cherry blossom trees are blooming in much of Seattle making for colorful walks with the pooch.

Two of our favorite places to view cherry blossoms are Green Lake and the University of Washington campus.

The clouds of pink flowers are only around for a few weeks. If you miss them, here are some pet events to get you out and about to see what else is blooming:

Grand Ridge Dog Hike: 10:30 a.m. Sunday, April 8. Dogs with leashes welcome on 3-5 mile hike. Bring water and poop-scoop supplies. Check the club's website (click on the name of the event) for details on where to meet and required gear.

Cowgirl Spirit Benefit Poker Ride & Walk/Run: 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 12, Bridle Trails State Park, 6619 132nd Ave N.E., Kirkland. Trail ride for horses and riders with walk/run for others followed by horse demonstrations. Proceeds benefit horse rescue. $30 for riders. $20 for walkers and runners. Space is limited. Fabulous Felines: Noon-3 p.m. Saturday, April 12, Phinney Ridge Neighborhood Association, 6532 Phinney Ave. N., Seattle. Meet cats from Seattle Animal Shelter foster homes that are ready for adoption. Fees for adoption are $45-$135.

April Drools Adoption Event: Noon Sunday, April 13, Paws-Abilities Total Dog Center, 7338 26th St. E., Fife. See about 100 adoptable dogs and cats from 15 shelters and rescues. Free admission. Before the adoption event, there's an optional 10:30 a.m. workshop ($20 per family) about choosing a pet. To register for the workshop, email Julie@pawsitivealliance.org.

Equine First Aid and Identification: 2 p.m.-4 p.m. Monday, April 14, Northwest Equine Stewardship, 9812 215th Ave. S.E., Snohomish. Learn what supplies to have in a first aid kit, how to handle minor mishaps and when to call a vet. For details, see the organization's website at http://nwesc.org/.

"Best Friends: Antique Images of Animals and Their People": Noon-4 p.m. Wednesdays-Sundays through April 15, White River Valley Museum, 918 H Street S.E., Auburn Community Campus, Auburn. This exhibition of images showcases the bond between people and animals. $1-$2, free on Wednesdays.

Dock Dogs at The Spring Fair in Puyallup: Friday, April 19, through Sunday, April 22, Puyallup Fair & Events Center, 110 9th Ave S.W., Puyallup. Watch dogs dive into spring while competing in distance jumps in a swimming pool. Check the fair's daily schedule for when the dogs will be jumping. Only dogs participating in Dock Dogs (and service animals) will be admitted to the fairgrounds. Admission to the fair is $7 students, $9 adults and kids 5 and under free.

Service Dog Fair: 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 21, Tacoma Coalition for People with Disabilities, 6315 S. 19th St. Tacoma. Event, organized by Assistance Dog Club of Puget Sound, offers information and education on legal issues concerning housing, rights and other topics related to service dogs. Cool City Pets: 1-3 p.m. Saturday, April 21, Seattle Animal Shelter, 2061 15th Ave. W., Seattle. Learn about rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs and other small animals available at this adoption event.

Cougar Mountain Dog Hike: 10 a.m. Friday, April 27, dogs with leashes welcome on a 3-5 mile hike with a 400-800 ft. elevation gain. Carry water and poop-scoop supplies. Check the club's website (click on the name of the event) for details on where to meet and required gear.

Reduced Rate for Spaying Female Cats: Through May 31, Seattle Animal Shelter, 2061 15th Ave. W., Seattle. Spring is often the time when shelters are overwhelmed with unwanted litters of kittens. To help reduce the number of homeless cats, the shelter is extending its "Beat the Heat" promotion to female cat spay surgery for $20 through the end of May. To make an appointment, call 206-386-4260. For more details about the low-cost spaying, see the shelter's website (click on the event name).
