Mar 29th 2012, 04:35

Shabazz Muhammad wasted little time Wednesday night proving his standing in the Class of 2012.

No. 1 recruit. Most coveted unsigned player.

Muhammad electrified a near sell-out crowd at the United Center with nine points during a two-minute span early in the first half and finished with a game-high 21 points to lead the West to a 106-102 victory against the East in the 35th McDonald's All-American Game.

The 6-foot-6 Muhammad answered any doubts about whether his name belonged with recent Morgan Wootten Player of the Year winners Austin Rivers, Harrison Barnes, Kevin Love, Dwight Howard and LeBron James by being named the game's MVP.

"When you come to any event you want to be known as the best player," Muhammad said. "At the beginning of the game I was really getting up and down the floor and things went great for me."

The left-handed Muhammad, who lists Kentucky, Duke, Kansas, UNLV and UCLA as his final schools, put on a show by making his first four shot attempts, including a 3-pointer and an alley-oop. .

He shot 10-for-18 from the floor, grabbed six rebounds and capped his night with thundering dunk with 93 seconds left to stop an East rally.

Duke-bound Rasheed Sulaimon made four 3s to finish with 18 points and four assists. Kentucky recruits Alex Poythress (19 points) and Archie Goodwin (14 points) showed their potential to join the recent wave of NBA-bound Wildcats.

Kyle Anderson, a UCLA recruit, had 13 points, eight assists and eight rebounds for the East.

"I thought I played well; I came within two rebounds and two assists from a triple-double," said Anderson, a 6-8 guard. "That's my game."

Player of the game: Shabazz Muhammad, West, 21 points, 6 rebounds.

Key performers: East — Alex Poythress, 19 points; Rodney Purvis, 15 points, 3 assists. West — Rasheed Sulaimon, 18 points, 4 assists; Archie Goodwin, 14 points, 3 steals.
